Our officiant, as well as my parents and the in-laws suggested that we attend pre-marital counseling. Bear in mind that we both come from Christian families, and our offciant is the pastor of our college church.

Did ya'll do Counseling? How is it? how much should we expect to pay?

We did it.  It was actually awesome.  My husband (FI at the time) was hesitant at first to go but we both ended up enjoying our counseling sessions and they allowed us to talk through all the wedding planning problems.  I'd highly recommend going, at least a couple times.

The first session is a little more usually - like $150.

But after that each session was $23.  We did have our insurance cover part of these sessions.  Talk to your counselor and see if she thinks your medical insurance will cover it.

She billed ours as falling under a family disturbance and then insurance did cover it.  We weren't really disturbed that much... but sometimes all the fighting during wedding planning did get in the way of our normal lives and work lives.  So I guess that insurance will cover it then!

Anyways, we loved having these sessions.  We learned a lot about how to effectively communicate and how to respect each other more.  I highly recommend it!

We went to the Engaged Encounter weekend, which was all that our priest required of us since he has known us for ages. I actually really, really enjoyed it. They taught us a lot about communication and about conflict, but we also discussed dreams and goals and priorities. It was a really great time. We wrote "engagement letters" to each other, and while he is generally a quiet guy, his letter made me cry.

However, I should mention that at least one couple I know decided that they weren't ready for marriage yet and pushed their date further back while they worked on some things brought out in the counseling sessions. I think it was the right decision for them too, but for FI and I they brought us closer together. I highly recommend them.
