Is anyone going to see the movie? I am so excited about this one coming out and cannot wait to see it!
Here's the link (presented by Oprah and Tyler Perry). The trailer brings tears to my eyes. Mariah Carey, Paula Patton, Monique! OMG! Date night!
I loved this book (Push by Sapphire) and I cannot wait to see the movie.
@wildstyle: i never read the book (i may have to get it along with my natural family planning book) but the movie looks amazing and gritty and hard core and happy all at once. the scenes with monique truly make me shiver with anticipation!
The movie does look awesome! The book blew me away so I was very excited to see it become a film!
There was a very interesting article about it in the New York Times Magazine. Anyone else read it?
@jocelyn: i haven't read the article, can you paraphrase it? this may be a perfect treat for myself during the day!!
I definitely want to see this movie. I've heard such good things about it.
@ jocelyn3476 - I read the Times article (the one in the magazine last Sunday). It was really good. I have not read the book, but plan to pick it up this weekend. I like how the director is really pushing back on the Hollywood ideas of "normal" looks/weight.
I live in Maine so I doubt the movie will open here (we hardly get anything that's not big movie studio blockbuster), but I have my eyes out for it!
@ crebre - I'll do you one better.
It's an interesting commentary on how the movie fits into race debate. It talks about how we are at a time where people think balance has finally been achieved because we have a Black president and discusses how the movie, for better or worse, highlights that as far as we have come, we are not yet there. It points out the conflict between drawing attention to negative stereotypes, which could be harmful, as opposed to ignoring them all together under the pretense that everything is fine and dandy, which could also be harmful.
Everyone who has already seen a screening has said hands down that there will be riots in the streets if Monique doesn't win the Oscar for her performance in this thing. I'm really looking forward to it.
I had read PUSH in college and then I bought it and made my man read it. LOL
i LOVED it so much.
I just saw the preview to the movie last night on T.V. and it reminded me so much of PUSH. I didnt know that they were related though.
I will be going to see this move! Can't wait!
I just read the book a few weeks ago. I can't wait for the movie to come out. They are going to do do limited screenings so get your tickets in advance!
OMG The article was riveting, spell binding even. I cannot wait to see it. I am sad it comes out next weekend, my son's dad is in town and we are child free. However, I am definitely going to see it either alone or with M. Wow. I cannot wait.
@jocelyn: i want to go pick up the book!! the story matter reminds me of a color purple. i remember reading the book and loving it and not enjoying the movie so much because it left out some of the pertinent parts of the book. i am sure the movie won't be able to bring in the depth and grittiness that the book explores, so on that note, i'll get the book lol!!
@crebre: I think I'm going to pick up the book on my way home today!
The book also sounds interesting because of the style that it is written in. Sort of a broken, uneducated English. I recall in The Bluest Eye how Toni Morrison played around using margin justification. It created the visual effect of equality and justification on certain pages and inequality, uneveness, and lack of a justification on others. I love when writers make words visual as opposed to just linguistic. And that is something than can never be translated to the screen.
yeppers!! m probably will hate the movie. i wrote for a LONG time and recently began to dabble in it again. i wrote a novel about a mulatto girl but i used racial slurs and it just ticked m off. he thought i was playing into stereotypes too much. of course that was before i experienced a lot of the racism here, but whatever life is not always about orchids and peonies (my favorite flowers). sometimes there are thorns and vines and thick shrubs to conquer before you can reach the good stuff. omg i cannot wait until i see this movie so that i can come back with my critique, i'm sure i'll love it though!!
im conflicted about seeing the movie. one the one hand, it seems moving, riveting, provoking...etc. on the other hand. i'll probably have nightmares about the content. im reading over the nyt review and i think i might walk out of the theatre ready to jump off a bridge... do you know how graphic the seens are depicting her sexual abuse? The article says theres one seen where the mom forces the daughter to perform oral sex on her... Is there at least a happy ending? Watching the previews almost make me cry...but I cried during the previews of pursuit of happyness too. Im wack...dont judge me. Im a big monique fan, and I live in LA so we will probably get the limited release... better question, how depressing was the book?
@futuremrsmorgan: i had a riveting and beautiful response to you and then my connection got lost. grrrr i haven't read the book. i doubt if they'll show the sexually explicit portions...
@Diva LOL!! That happens to me all the day. Then you dont feel like typing all that stuff again.
Me and my mom were just talking about the movie. She just saw Good Hair and theres a long preview. Promise you'll pm me and review the movie...i have a horrible picture memory and I will die with those images in my head if its hard core. I dont want to turn anyone else off from seeing it because I am all about supporting black actors, directors, writers, and producers...
how did you like good hair? i really want to see it or did your mom see it and not you?
Hey all,
I really want to se Push as well, but I know that it's going to hard emotionally. I feel like as I get older it's hard for me to see heart-wrenching things. THat being said, I do want to support important works like this. I also do want to see Good Hair. I've heard varying opinions on it. I think I might try to see it this weekend.
yeah it looks very disturbing, i'm very saddened by the fact that she's hiv positive, i wish it gave a glimmer of hope even though hiv isn't a death sentence it's still like dang, how's she going to conquer this.
I am definitely going to see it despite the tough subject matter.
I sooo want to see this movie! I'm tempted to try to read the book first before I watch it though since I always like to compare and contrast the two, lol.
@ms mojito... i am pretty sure that i will as well
@lillindy:i hate reading the book before i see a movie because the book is always better lol... i am always underwhelmed, no matter how good the movie is you know...
I can't wait to see Precious! I know it will be really tough to swallow, but it looks amazing. Also, gonna read the book later...I have the same problem...I'm always disappointed if I read the book before.
@crebre80-Me too! Once you read a book, the movie is almost always not as good!
I read the book this weekend! Very heartwrenching but I am interested to see faces put to the characters in the book. Definitely seeing the movie this weekend.
@hotchild: how was the ending of the book was it (dang it no don't tell me lol)
@flipflop and mojito: i am glad to know that i am not the only one who feels this way about reading books before movies...
A couple friends & I are planning to watch it this Friday, is there a website that shows which theatres its playing at?
I just watched a special on it (Sunday Morning) and was entranced. What a bold project! I really want to see it as well but may wait for DVD because movies with subject serious manner + movie theaters don't always work out for me. (too many distractions/rude/annying movie going patrons)
@Diva - i liked Good Hair. it was funny, but it wasnt a comedy per se. its just a really eye opening look at the 'hair industry', which african americans funnel billions (literally) of dollars into. One the one hand, I do all types of crazy stuff to my hair (weaves, color, perm, etc) and I probably wont stop. On the other hand, I hadnt realized that purchasers of the hair basically have a monopoloy and refuse to do business with blacks. isnt that crazy? here the main consumers are blacks and yet we are cut out of having any ownership. and, the hair is often times DONATED as part of religious beliefs and these people get NONE of the proceeds. So I pay $250 for 5 oz of hair and the owner is living off of >>$1.0 per day.
@futuremrs: maybe the movie will bring changes in?! that's crazy to me!! i wear perms and i heard about the scene where they said the perm would burn a hole in the floor (OMG) but umm yeah i love my perm... i have slacked off and only get it done like once ever 12 weeks.
Oh man, I really want to see this! I don't know who to go with though :( FI would love it, I think, but we are long distance.
I saw a screening of Precious.... It's amazing. Devastating and gutwrenching and incredibly moving and hopeful. If you go see it, I will bet the movie will stick with you for a very long time (in a good way.) And I am totally on the "give Mo'nique an Oscar" train. Everyone was amazing (even Mariah Carey!) but Mo'nique was profoundly and overarchingly fantastic, even as I hated her character.
The interesting thing is that there were a lot of people to hate in the movie, but at the same time, you empathize with them, because you see what happened in their life that turned them into the monsters they became. It's really interesting to see what you get out of it as a viewer.
Can you tell I loved it? :)
@danielle: :( are there any bees in your area? we could always go together virtually and text each other lol
@snapdragon:thanks so much!! i am thinking of treating myself and going by myself.
