My sister is having her first baby and I’m looking for some good resources to send her. I know that she wants to give birth in a hospital but she is talking about wanting to do it without an epidural and she’s scared of the possibility of tearing. I know that there are things that can be done to help avoid both (of course, I know tearing can happen, but I’ve heard of techniques to reduce the risk). Being her older sister, I really want to help arm her with all the information she needs to make a birth plan and help her get the birth experience she wants (of course, there are no guarantees, but I want her to have lots of information). Does anyone have suggestions? I know she wouldn’t be open to a home birth or anything like that, so anything too “granola” probably wouldn’t be too appealing to her (although, I’d be interested for future reference ) Thanks!

My favorite birthing book is The Birth Partner by Penny Simkin. It has so much information for both natural and medicated births, and it pretty much covers every angle of labor/delivery.
I think it’s so sweet you’re doing this for your sister. 🙂 I’m sure she appreciated your support!

Aw, thanks. She’s 22 and it was a surprise pregnancy, so I’m trying to be extra supportive and I really want it to go as smoothly as possible for her.
That book looks great, thank you! She has What to Expect When You’re Expecting, but I’ve heard it’s really not that great and is kind of scary, so I may get this for her as a replacement.

Does anyone have any website recommendations?

I haven’t read it but I’ve heard that Girlfriend’s Guide to Pregnancy has really good info in a humorous way 🙂

I heard Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth is really helpful for women wanting a natural/unmedicated birth.

I really love alphamom.com and pregnantchicken.com. I second Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth for a book coupled with the movie Business of Being Born. BoBB streams instantly on netflix if you have it.
