@squishycupcake:  We told my parents first (in person) and then told his parents in person when we flew to see them 5 days later. I would definitely tell them in person if at all possible!

Congratulations!

Hmm if you only want  the parents to know for now, I’d not reveal it at a big family event – that would make it really hard for them not to tell everyone else! Haha.

I told my mom just one weekend when I was going for a visit – showed her the doctor report that said my pregnancy test was positive. I was only 4 weeks along, but I figured I would want her support if anything went downhill anyway. We told my MIL on her birthday (a month later) with a “Grandparents Handbook” book with our first ultrasound stuffed into it. She was super excited and said it was the best gift ever 🙂

In person would be best, but possibly at a time where they can get the news more privately? I think it is alright to have time between the reveals 🙂

@squishycupcake:  We told my mom when I was 5 weeks and we told the in-laws today, just shy of 9 weeks. We didn’t tell them at a big family event but they’re so excited that they already told a few people, only family and really close friends, but we had wanted to wait until 12 weeks, it doesn’t seem like that’s going to happen. So I guess if you don’t want other people knowing I wouldn’t do it at a big family event.

@squishycupcake:  First of all congrats!! 🙂 Second of all, how long are you going for? Is it possible to tell them after the big family event – but while you’re still there and there aren’t a bazillion people around??

Maybe wait until the end of the big family event, after MIL is away from everyone else for the evening/weekend to tell her? That way, she won’t have the opportunity to see other people and spill it.

@squishycupcake:  Have a “mocktail” in your hand. No one knows whether or not you have a lil vodka in your cranberry juice. 😉

@squishycupcake:  Ahh I see, in that case, lovekiss’ idea sounds best! 🙂 Good luck!

@squishycupcake:

i had a similar situation. last year i was on this board talking about my wedding and 6 months later I’m talking about the pregnancy!

This is my parents’ first grandchild and we found out a while before mother’s day.I thought telling them on mother’s day would be such a surprise but i was nervous because i was only about 7 weeks. i did it any way! i asked them to at least keep a lid on it until i went to the OB a couple weeks later.

My MIL absolutely cannot keep herself from sharing news of any kind, good or bad! We had to invite a few extra people from DH’s extended family and family friends because my MIL kept gushing about our upcoming wedding to people who we didn’t plan to invite.

I bit the bullet and gently explained to DH why I wanted to wait the full 12 weeks to tell his mom the news, even if I do choose to tell my mom earlier. He surprised me by accepting my reasoning. Two weeks later we were visiting with DH’s family and his aunt out of the blue brought up my brother’s marital troubles (a new development I wasn’t generally announcing, but I had confided in my MIL earlier). This reinforced my decision.

I don’t have a problem with my MIL knowing, but because telling her means everyone she knows will also hear the news, I will definitely wait until I’m ready for it to be public knowledge.
