Good morning bees,
I am curious about pregnancy weight gain. I know some people who barely gained any weight, and pretty much left hospital the same weight as before they were pregnant. Others gain 50+ pounds.
I don’t have much experience around pregnant people so I was wondering if you could tell me about your weight gain experiences. I know these days you’re not supposed to eat for two… but some people gain a lot of weight still.
-Did you gain weight in other areas besides the tummy?
-Did you gain weight despite eating the same amount or less as usually do prior to being pregnant?
-Did you feel the need to eat more and thus gained weight?
Thank you for any advice. I am not planning on getting pregnant just yet, but I am doing a bit of research so I know better what to expect 🙂

Baby #1- gained about 40 lbs (but I was a teenage and about 115 lbs to start with)
Baby #2- gained 20 lbs
Baby #3- only 17 weeks and have lost 12 lbs.
It seems like no matter where I start weight wise I always end around the same number. I have lost weight in the begining of all of my pregnancie due to morning sickness and increased metabolism. I put on mostly belly with a little extra cushion on my legs and chest. I have bee nlucky to lose the weight quickly (I wore regular jeans about 4 days after #2 was born). I stay pretty active with my kids and try to eat somewhat healthy, which can be hard with the MS sometimes. Breast feeding also helps the weight come off quickly too.

-Did you gain weight despite eating the same amount or less as usually do prior to being pregnant? I don’t think I am eating the same amount as pre-pregnancy or as healthy as I did before…it’s just too hard for me.
-Did you feel the need to eat more and thus gained weight? yes.
I am about week 26 and gained 20 lbs so far. I am 5’8 and was 126 pre-pregnancy if that helps.

I gained 35 pounds. I didn’t go crazy while pregnant (ie no buttered poptarts) but I did eat a ton of carbs and fruits every day. Next time I will make sure to get more protein and vegetables in. I am guessing I had an average of 3-4 bowls of cereal every day.
I gained it all around my middle. Not necessarily the belly either. I actually never got a very big belly and at certain angles I looked like I just gained 35 pounds without being pregnant. I got some SERIOUS junk in the trunk (as someone who was always mocked for my flat ass I was stoked, but after I had my baby it sank like the titanic and I am still trying to get it back to its perky shape 10 months later), thick thighs, huge boobs, etc.
I can’t make any promises, but every woman I know was able to get at least close to her pre pregnancy shape within 6-9 months of having her baby.

I’m only 25 weeks so I don’t know what the final number will be but as of today I am up 30 pounds. I am freaked out by this number but my blood pressures, sugar levels, etc are perfect and baby is growing rapidly. I have gone up 2 cups sizes so most of my weight seems to be between my chest and my stomach. I also feel like I have gained weight in my legs too. I am constantly starving. If I don’t eat every 2 hours I feel lightheaded and sick. I am cooking all of my meals and trying my best to make healthy choices but I constantly eating.
My mother gaines a lot of weight and had big babies and dropped all of her weight by 6 weeks so I am hoping I do the same. I play to breastfeed and walk every day after she is born and if needed I will get a sitter to be able to get to the gym. I was also very active and not overweight upon getting pregnant.

Did you gain weight in other areas besides the tummy? I really haven’t noticed any weight gain anywhere besides boobs/tummy but some of my maternity pants are a little more snug in the leg area the past few weeks so I wouldn’t be surprised if I gained a little there too.
-Did you gain weight despite eating the same amount or less as usually do prior to being pregnant? I had to start eating more around week 16 because I hadn’t gained any weight at that point. I added a snack in the morning (protein/complex carbs or fruit) and that seemed to help.
-Did you feel the need to eat more and thus gained weight? I really wasn’t more hungry for the most part so I didn’t feel the need to eat more until I was told that I had to. Now I’m careful to make sure I’m eating enough even when I’m not necessarily hungry.
I’m just over 37 weeks and have gained 21lbs so far. I’ve continued to work out and watch what I eat though, otherwise I think I probably would have gained a lot more.

-Did you gain weight in other areas besides the tummy?I mostly gained in my tummy, but I did plump up a bit more in my legs & face too. My boobs really didn’t get bigger until after Dirty Delete was born and my milk came in..booo!
-Did you gain weight despite eating the same amount or less as usually do prior to being pregnant?I ate the recommended amount of calories during my pregnancy. Sure, I had a few extra goodies here & there, but I didn`t use my pregnancy as an excuse to eat tons of food. I gained weight slowly but consistantly through my whole pregnancy. It was pretty “textbook.”
-Did you feel the need to eat more and thus gained weight?I just ate what was recommended for the most part(see above).
In total I gained 30lbs, which was the appropriate range for my beginning weight.
When I gave birth, I totally expected to lose a ton of weight really quick, and when that didn’t happen( I only lost maybe 10-12lbs by the time I left the hospital), I was SURE I’d really have to work my arse off to lose the rest of the weight.
With breastfeeding and healthy eating though(I didn’t do much extra exercising), I slowly, but consistantly lost all of my baby weight and a few lbs extra. It took about 6 months to get down to my pre-preg weight.

I gained close to 60lbs but a severe amount of that was my giant 10lb8oz baby and a lot of retained water. I’m less than 10lbs away from my pre-preg weight at 3 months pp.
-Did you gain weight in other areas besides the tummy? Yes, everywhere from the top of my head to my toes.
-Did you gain weight despite eating the same amount or less as usually do prior to being pregnant? I probably ate a little more than normal. I was ravenous.
-Did you feel the need to eat more and thus gained weight? Yes, that was probably a big part of it.

I’m 8 months pregnant, so I’m answered based on my current state.
Did you gain weight in other areas besides the tummy?
Nope, it’s all belly (and boobs! woohoo!). Here’s my most recent baby-bump picture, taken @32w (I’m currently 35w).
Did you gain weight despite eating the same amount or less as usually do prior to being pregnant?
N/A (I’ve only gained the pregnancy weight, not any extra. To-date, I’m up 20 pounds from my starting weight, which is actually a little bit below where the weight-gain charts say I should be.)
Did you feel the need to eat more and thus gained weight?
When I was eating the most was in 1st trimester, I was probably eating an extra 500+ calories a day (extra full-sized meals), but I didn’t gain anything during 1st trimester. My eating habits have tapered off, and the past couple weeks I think I might be eating less than I did pre-pregnancy, I think baby is squishing my stomach or something.
My thoughts are this: As long as I eat healthy food, my body will do what it needs to do. When I’m hungry, I eat. If I’m not hungry, I don’t force myself to eat just for the sake trying to get an extra x-number of calories per day. I don’t count calories or watch the scale.

-Did you gain weight in other areas besides the tummy? Not much; boobs grew in a massive way, but otherwise, not so much. I was exercising more and making healthier choices so the rest of me actually evened out; I was on the heavy side when I got PG and decided that was my chance to turn over a new leaf.
-Did you gain weight despite eating the same amount or less as usually do prior to being pregnant? I was losing my own fat through healthier eating and exercise, so I really didn’t gain that much. The only weight I gained was actual baby weight. 10 lbs total, and my son was 7 of it.
-Did you feel the need to eat more and thus gained weight? I ate more, but what I ate was healthy, so it didn’t result in weight gain. I’d eat a carton of strawberries in one sitting, or a plate full of veggies, etc.

I have gained 40 lbs so far and I am 33 weeks along. id say i am on the trajectory to gain about 50 total.
I think what made me gain mostly was having such an exhausting first trimester. I gained the majority of my weight then and you can’t diet later on. I was so tired and had many aversions to healthy foods i normally love so i needed energy and i didnt make the best choices. Then in second trimester i got healthier, started exercising everyday which includes prenatal yoga and 3-5 mile walks. It’s harder now that its hot out but i may incorporate swimming.
I gained in my belly, boobs, hips, thighs, arms, face….the only place i gained minimaly is from elbow to my hands (only a teeny puffy) and from knees to feet (not gaining a shoe size yet). My doctor seems unconcerned though she did tell me to stop drinking juice which helped alot. she said juice is just empty calories so eat fruit instead. I did and that helped. I will indulge in chocolate or a burger now and then but i try to eat mostly healthy meals.
Everyone is different, some people will gain all in their belly, some all over, some in certain spots. All i can say is that your doctor will help keep you on track. Many women i know eat nothing but junk and have gained way less than me so i think you body and metabolism during pregnancy will determine alot of it too.

at full term I was 138 Lbs incli=uding LOTS of water weight
2 weeks post pregnancy I weighed 115lbs again

I am 33 weeks and have gained about 14 pounds and its only in my belly.

First, remember every single person is different!
I gained 27 lbs with my first baby and I’m currently 2 weeks post-partum and only up 4 lbs from pre-pregnancy weight. I was 135 and very active prior (and during pregnancy).
-Did you gain weight in other areas besides the tummy? Just the boobs and belly.
-Did you gain weight despite eating the same amount or less as usually do prior to being pregnant? For most of my pregnancy I ate the same amount as I usually do, or even less than normal since I didn’t run for most of my pregnancy. During the last week I pigged out on cake, cookies, and chipwiches and put on 4 lbs… opps.
-Did you feel the need to eat more and thus gained weight? No. I just ate when I was hungry but I never denied myself a small dessert.
I think most people tend to gain in a similar fashion to their moms/sisters. I gained a bit more than my mom and sister did, but they found that with Boyfriend or Best Friend the weight came right off during the first few months.

When I had my first daughter, I gained 40 lbs but that is because I had the wrong mentality. I thought, I am prego, I can eat what I want. Boy was I wrong!
With my second daughter I only gained 20 lbs totaly. I am hoping that when I get pregnant with my third, I loose some weight at first and gain no more then 20 lbs.
