I'm not late. I'm not regular without birth control. I'm still on birth control. I had a random thought to take a pregnancy test. It's 10 PM... I know you're normally supposed to take a test first thing in the morning.

    Here are my questions....

Anyone ever taken a pregnancy test, gotten a positive, then not actually been pregnant?

Any thoughts on what may cause me to have a positive test result other than pregnancy? I am on prenatal vitamins. Think that could be it? Just thought of that one...

Should I skip taking my birth control tonight... just in case?

So you got a postive test?

If I were you, I'd go get another test. Try the digital kind instead of the line kind; the line kind can sometimes be hard to read and sometime people look at it too hard and either worry or hope makes them squint to see a line that really isn't there.

No, prenatal vitamins would not cause a postive test. They are just multivitamins with some of the amounts of certain nutrients tweaked. A postive test is because of pregnancy hormones in your body.

I'm confused, you already took it and it was positive or you are going to take it?

@SFreeman2187: The odds of a false positive are very rare. You could get another test, just to be sure. But I never heard of anyone getting a positive result and not being pregnant. And it really doesn't matter much if you test in the am or pm.

    Good luck! :-D

Call your doc and schedule a blood test! Its probably too early to tell for sure about everything.

Then in the mean time, go off your pill, lay off any booze or baby harming activities and use an alternate form of Birth Control!

I agree, take another test to be sure, but most likely you are pregnant. It seems like the best explination is your birth control failed, I don't know for sure the answers to your questions, but to me that it the most likely situation.

@SFreeman2187: Your vitamins have nothing to do with a positive test. Oh my! Digital positive is super rare. Get another test.

I'm sorry - I want to punch all of you right now!!!! I'm a little happy but that would just be insane. Taking the second test in the morning. Guess I'll be packing water bottles instead of Mike's Hard Lemonade. :(

    Wow.

Any ideas on how it could have occurred. You have been taking your pills, correct?!

Yes! I'm good at taking my pills! I did screw up once and took it about 12 hours late but that was probably less than a week ago. I used to be much worse about taking them and never got pregnant!

He knows. I walked into the living and pushed the test in his face and kept saying "I'm not even freaking kidding!". He pretty much wants me to shutup until we take one first thing in the morning. I will believe it more if tomorrow's test is positive...

And if it's positive, I'm driving to the store to buy about 4 more. Maybe a few different brands.

I'm going to bed... guess I will update tomorrow. If tomorrow's test(s) say negative, I'll be a little disappointed but won't really be upset. If it's positive, well, I have no idea what to say about that.

My step-sister has been pregnant 3 times and every time she got pregnant was when she was using birth control. The first time was the shot, second the patch, and third the pill. It happens. Take another test and tell your FI.

Well... have you taken any other medications lately? OTC or Rx?.. both can affect the effectiveness of BC.

    Goodluck on your a.m. testing

i was on the pill religiously for 5 years, never missed one.ever. and i got pregnant. i wasnt taking any antibiotics or anything that would cancel my pill. i took my test at 11 pm on an empty stomach and it was positive before i even had my pants back up. i took another one the next morning and it was positive really fast too. dont freak out, get a blood test asap the dr can tell you for sure. it will be ok though it just sucks you cant drink at your wedding. congrats date twin!!

Test 1: Last night, 9 PM ish.... Positive

Test 2: This morning, 630 AM ish... Negative

I just went and bought three more.

The reasons I took the test:

Urge to try on my rehearsal dinner dress and it doesn't fit

    Craving soft pretzels

Couldn't make myself eat a hamburger yesterday, then microwaved some Lean Cuisine thing and threw that away, and ended up eating chips and salsa for dinner

I think I look fatter but I haven't gained any weight

Moody as hell but I blame that on the wedding (6 days away!)

    Dehydrated

I don't know if this is a symptom or not but my stomach feels like I've worked out 4 days in a row or something. My muscles feel like they're worked and I've been too busy to go to the gym.

I am a bit of a paranoid person, maybe a hypochondriac. I just can't imagine WHY I would have one positive test.

@SFreeman2187:There is a very small percent of false positives; mostly from misreading or misusing the test. Most say you really need to bring a timer in with you because reading too late can give a false positive and reading too early (only if you're very very early in your pregnancy) can give a false negatice.

    False positives are rare.

What are the HCG sensitivities of the different tests? Did you get a positive on the more sensitive test? Try again in two days.

And congrats on your upcoming wedding!

OMG, SFreeman, I totally feel your pain! I literally just went through this last week, but I was using condoms instead of pills...

I had a positive digital test about 2 days after my missed period. I had taken it becuase I was terribly moody and mostly becuase I had very very sore boobs.

Freaked out, took 3 more, they were all negative.

Went to the doctor and had a blood test, which was negative.

Waited another week, took another test, and it was negative.

That same day (when I was officially 2 weeks late), I started the worst period of my life (which is still going on--it also seems to be the longest :-/ ).

False positives are *very* rare. I had received the positive on a CVS brand digital test (tho to be fair, that also gave me some negatives).  The doc thinks that I most likely had a chemical pregnancy-meaning that I was actually pregnant but something was wrong with it or it couldn't impant in my utuerus or something. If I was pregnant, it would only have been a couple of weeks. But until AF showed up, I definitely acted like I was preggo just in case.

It was the worst most emotional week of my life and my husband's life. I totally feel you. I would run and get a blood test. If you don't have time to go to the doctor, maybe you can do one at planned parenthood? The PP office by my house offers both blood and urine tests.  Its horrible to be in such limbo. I dealt with it by eating lots of ice cream (I realize you might not be that into it if you are getting married soon...but it still makes me happy).

Good luck! Fingers crossed that you get what you want.

Are the 2nd and 3rd tests the same brand/type?

Second test was same brand. Third test was different, but probably better, brand.

I'm thinking I will just go on as if I'm not pregnant because I can't imagine how it would even be possible. I never even imagined I would be able to get pregnant easily/normally and sure don't think I'd get pregnant without actually TRYING.

I might still lay off the booze... just in case.  I agree that it doesn't seem like you are preggers.  I would think the morning test would be more accurante and because you used the same type of test it would have the same sensitivity... But, like people have said false negatives are way more common than false positives.

@Argentina, Thanks! I feel ok about it--at least I'm not in limbo any more!

@SFreeman, I agree about laying off the booze. I know it sucks for your wedding. For what its worth, I had planned on drinking the delicious wine we ordered for our wedding all night. But, I was running around talking to people and dancing and having the best time of my entire life, that I got really hot and just drank ginger ale all night. It was still incredible, and I felt like I was drunk (actually probably even better than drunk).  No matter what I'm sure you are going to have the best time!

@SFreeman2187: yeah don't kill me but my mom's had 3 kids and all 3 were while she was steadily on BC....

HCG hormones double every OTHER day so taking it two days in a row is pointless...wait another day and take one....Good Luck!

***Side-Note: I don't thnk you should continue your BC because what it does is that is depleats your uterine wall where the egg is now attached so it can cause very very early miscarriages....Maybe you could stop them just for another day and take another test say tomorrow

I think the best answer is to get a blood test with your doctor, they can order a quantitavitve HcG test which will tell how much of the pregnacy hormones are in your system to be certain you are (or arent pregnant).  Also, oral contraceptives, even when taken correctly 100% of the time, still have a (small) failure rate!

Sounds like a chemical pregnancy at this point; unfortunately, they are far more common than most people think.  Maybe don't get tanked (just in case), but you're probably safe to drink.
