Prenatals need folic acid. If you’re taking one with out it… you could put your baby at risk for spinal defects.

Just FYI, silicon dioxide and titanium dioxide aren’t really dangerous except as inhalation hazards, meaning it can damage your lungs if inhaled in powder form. So as long as you don’t grind up your prenatals and snort them, it’s unlikely to have any adverse effects. I say this as a professional chemist with a graduate degree, who works with these compounds on a regular basis.

Silicon is actually known to be important to bone development. And also, silicon and titanium dioxide are in almost every powdered food product (artificial sweeteners, powdered drinks like iced tea), they’re just used to keep things nice an powdery. Silicon dioxide also occurs naturally in fruits, and is in pretty much every cup of water you drink. http://www.livestrong.com/article/518021-natural-foods-that-contain-silicon-dioxide/

The media and “natural foods” community are quick to sensationalize things, so take everything you read with a grain of salt. If in doubt, look for articles in peer reviewed journals, or look up the MSDS (material safety data sheet) which is documentation that is required to list all the potential hazards of a chemical.

Also, as far as the sodium benzoate/benzene comments, you inhale more benzene when you put gas in your car than you are likely to get from a multivitamin.

I apologize for the long post, and don’t mean to preach, but it’s frustrating that the media demonizes science by coming up with the sensationalized crap about “dangerous” chemicals. It scares people for no reason.
