Hi! I’ve been lurking around the baby boards for awhile, and finally decided to post. My hubby and I will probably start TTC sometime this fall. So, I recently started taking the OB one prenatal vitamins to help prep my body. I originally decided to go with this brand because they have everything in one pill, and, at least to me, they smell like vanilla (bonus!). However, I’ve noticed that I often get really burpy after taking one (gross, I know!). To compound the problem, they tend to be really fishy smelly/tasting. Sorry if this is Too Much Information, but I was wondering if anyone else has encountered this probem, or come up with any good solutions. Thanks so much in advance!!

@LambsEars: I know that my prenatal vitamins taste gross as well! Super gross.
I usually try to take the pill with juice or lemon water to get rid of the taste and I’ve heard that you should take the vitamins with food to stop the gross tummy feelings.
I know that you’re not alone with this.

I’m not taking prenatals, but I am taking a daily vitamin. I don’t normally like them precisely because of what you stated. I randomly bought Jamieson For Women Vita-Vim and they’re gel caplets with pink powder inside (yay! good surprise!). I find I don’t get any weird after taste or nausea like I used to taking “regular” daily multi-vitamins (the big hard pill). I think my body finds them easier to break down, I’m really happy with them.

@LambsEars: I work for a vitamin manufacturing company and the key is to find enteric coated softgels if they contain any type of fish oil product (most pre-natals contain DHA from fish oil/Omega-3). The enteric coating prevents the fish smell and allows the body to digest the fish oil later within your system preventing the “burp up” issue.

I get that when I burp, mine are the prescription ones as well. I just try not to burp right after taking them.LOL

i had that when i was taking the prescription ones too. i heard that keeping them in the fridge can prevent the fishy burps. i ended up taking over the counter vitamins and now take the target brand dha supplement, which is vegetarian (made from plant derivatives). they don’t make me burp and aren’t fishy.

My OBGyn prescribed Prenatal Plus and I haven’t experienced any of the problems other bees post. No fishy burps, no burps at all, no upset stomach, don’t taste bad, and easy to swallow.

I would highly suggest trying a different brand. I got some without DHA for the first trimester because I couldn’t stand the fishy taste. I now am using the vitafusion gummies with DHA because they don’t taste fishy. They are hard to find around me so I just order them from amazon.

Thanks, ladies for all the wonderful advice! I’m going to try sticking my remaining ones in the fridge and see if that helps. If not, I think it might be time to try another brand. 🙂

Also make sure you are taking them with food – I have to take mine in the middle of a meal (so, not on an empty stomach, but not at the end of a meal). If I do this, I don’t have any problems. If I forget… nasty.

Hi ladies! I just thought I’d post an update in case anyone else is having a similar issue. I didn’t have any luck with sticking the OB prenatals in the fridge. The fishy burps persisted inspite of the cold and pairing with food (stubborn little buggers)! So I decided to switch brands. I just started the Vitafusion gummy prenatals + DHA about a week ago and love them. No fishy after taste, no fishy burps. 🙂

Thank you. Maybe I’ll try those next…

@LambsEars:Gross! I used to take vitamins like that. I had to quit taking them.
I take gummy vitamins because they have the DHA and all, but they don’t give me fishy burps or make me nauseous.
I think even Target has them in generic.

I agree with the gummies and taking them shortly after you eat something. I had the same problem!

Oops! I didn’t see– you’re already taking the gummies. 🙂 Good call!
