Bees, help. I am 13 weeks along, and have tried Target brand prenatal and Trader Joe's brand prenatal (they are like gigantic horse pills), and I have SUCH a sour stomach from them...
I know I need to take them, but these are really doing a number on me. Does anyone have any gentle recommendations? Preferably something gummy and fruit flavored LOL
I wasn't able to take pills when I was pregnant so my physicians had me take Flinstone Vitamins because the Folic Acid in them is what you really need.
Hope that helps!
My doctor recommended me taking flintstone completes. When I compared them to my target brand prenatals- they actually had more 100% daily values than the prenatals had. And they surely tasted better! They do not have 100% of calcium though, so my doctor also told me to get some smoothie tums and take 2 of those per day to get to 100% in calcium. Worked well for me. Good luck!
The prenatal vitamins that my doctor prescribed don't bother me, I am still taking them with muchkin being born as recommended. You may want to speak with your doctor on this
Back when we thought about TTC, my doc gave me a prescription for pre natals...I don't know what they were called, but they were blue and had a light vanilla scent to them. They never made me sick which is amazing because almost every vitamin out there will make me feel awful. So, maybe talk to your doc? Sorry I couldn't be more specific.
I have spoken to my doctor, I was taking a prescription one that was awful (red, and tons of iron), then she recommended switching to Target which was a no go (though the Target ones were fine my first pregnancy which is weird). Then I told her I was switching to Trader Joe's and she said really any kind is fine as long as I'm hitting the recommended ingredients which she provided me on a list. I just need some suggestions about what worked for others, because this pregnancy is hitting me a lot differently than last time.
I'm not pregnant, but have been taking the Vitafusion gummies. They taste pretty good, for vitamins anyway. Maybe try taking them before bed?
@Lolasmomma: I actually like to sneak some of my daughter's flintstone vitamins and love smoothie tums, so that sounds promising!
I've heard good things about Vitafusion and Rainbow Lite. Would taking them with food help, or are you already doing that?
@pinkpaperbride: I take them with breakfast. I am not having morning sickness which is why I choose to take them early, because once 4pm or so rolls around I get so sick.
Compare the bottle of prenatals that you have to the bottle of flintstone vitamins. You will be shocked at how many of the flintstone completes are 100% of the daily recommended value!
Not gummy or fruit flavored, but I take "New Chapter Perfect Prenatal".
It's an organic, food-based vitamin. It's easy on the stomach. Has probiotics to aid in digestion. And the dose is split up into 3 pills, so you can take 1 pill with each meal, which is better for absorption anyway because some vitamins/minerals your body can only absorb so much at one time. (You can also take all 3 pills at once if you want, I prefer to spread them out.)
I took prescription Prenatabs and they worked great for me. I am still taking them. They were cheaper for me than OTC because insurance covered them.
Im not planning on being pregnant for a while but I know that a lot of vitamins don't make me feel good either. I really like the brand vitafusion and it is gummy. I know they also carry a prenatal one so maybe check it against the list that your doc gave you.
I get my worst sickness at night with this pregnancy, and I take mine right before going to sleep. If I can time it right, I take my pills and fall asleep within 15 minutes, so I rarely feel sick from them before passing out.
Have you tried the Similac Mom shakes? They have vitamins, folic acid, protein and they are also supposed to help with nausea. I tried them and they were pretty good-I'm not sure how much of the recommended vitamins/nutrients they have compared to the vitamins themselves but better than nothing. They are a little pricey though..
I take the Rainbow Lite once a day vitamins. They actually have ginger and some other stomach-soothing ingredients so they are pretty gentle on my stomach. I've been having MS, but I'm still able to take them at night (with a bit of milk, followed by a glass of water).
I take Caltrate Calcium and Vitamin D3 gummies, might be worth looking in to. Vivactiv is good too but sometimes it's just too much for me in the morning.
Though I'm not pregnant, I've had a hard time taking vitamins in the past...freezing them seems to help quite a bit.
@Blue Eyes: My doctor also recommended Vitafusion when I told her my current prenatals were upsetting my stomach.
I had a terrible time with prenatal vitamins until a midwife suggested Premesis. They worked perfectly for me. Love them. I actually took them for five years afterwards with no problem. (My health sucks and need the extra help these give.)
I'm not pregnant, but I have NEVER found a vitamin i could take. I use the gummy vites prenatals now....I looooove them. I take them everyday on (sometimes I'm bad and do it on an empty stomach too) with no probs. They have the DHA inside too, which is why you have to take more than one of them.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE BellyBar Chewable Prenatals. I am not preggers, but I have been taking them for a while now. Very easy on your stomach.
Soo...while we're on the topic of prenatals, what time of day does everyone take their vitamins? Is there a recommended time? morning? night? whatever?
I could NEVER hold down my prenatal vitamins when I was pregnant, until I found one call pregvit (i think thats how you spell it) . Anyways thats the only type that wouldnt make me sick! Goodluck!
Love the Vitafusion gummies. Been taking them for over a year now. They are great!
(not pregnant or TTC yet) I usually take them right after lunch--I keep them on my desk at work so I don't forget.
I've found that the current vitamins I bought upset my stomach in the morning, so I'm switching to nights instead...after dinner when I have a full belly. I was just curious to hear what others did and if there was any reasoning behind it.
I take Rainbow Lite at night and I don't get sick from them. They have a tummy calming blend that may help. Target sells them at a great price. I don't pay more than $13 for 30 days worth. My midwife gave me a sample of vitamins that were pink and the DHA tablets were red and smelled and tasted like Vanilla! Loved those. But I'd imagine they were a little more pricey and not as natural as Rainbow Lite. Hope you find something that works for you :)
I want to say THANK YOU all so much for the fantastic suggestions, I sincerely appreciate them and will be trying quite a few of these brands until I find the right one!
Like some of the PP's have said, Vitafusion is a great option. They are pretty good and have not made me sick at all. I took some actual vitamins when I was pregnant and for awhile after but they kept making me nautious. I suggest trying them.
when my big horse pills were bothering me during my first trimester full of icky morning sickness, i just switched to chewable multi-vitamins and a super small folate supplement. The multi-vitamins had all the same ingredients as my big horse pills, but they were yummy and way easier on my stomach. The folate pills were so tiny I had no problem taking them.
Love love love my "New Chapter Perfect Prenatal." I can take it without food, and I never could do that with any other vitamin. I just lay out all the pills for the day on the counter, that way I can know whether I have taken three each day... (at first the three a day was intimidating - I could not remember how many I had taken!)
Thanks to you ladies I now have an arsenal of vitamins in my freezer. I'm sick of putzing around with something that shouldn't even be a big deal. I have:
Gummy Flintstone Completes (YUM!!!) and Tums Smoothies (calcium rich)
Viafusion Gummies (love)
Rainbow Lite (haven't tried yet)
and then I ordered the New Chapter Perfect Prenatals. Overboard maybe, but I figure this will get me through the rest of my pregnancy and then into breastfeeding too
@KatyElle: Glad to hear you now have an arsenal and hopefully at least one of them works well for you! If not though, like a PP, I also take the Bellybar chewable prenatals and have had no problem with them. It's two tablets a day so I take one with breakfast and one with dinner. They are the only chewable prenatal I have found that contains iron and I've found that splitting them up through the day causes zero stomach upsets.
Also a side question for those taking the Vitafusion - I was about to take those but then read that the Vitamin A comes from retinol something or other, and that's apparently not been proven safe for baby. Does anyone know anything about that? That was the sole deciding factor that pushed me to Bellybar as the Vitamin A there comes from beta-carotene. I'm just wondering as I will be needing to stock up on more prenatals pretty soon.
If you have found no good solution, take a liquid with aloe vera juice in it. The aloe helps calm digestion, and is used for those with IBS as well.
Any liquid prenatal with DHA.
And yes, you do not need much vitamin A. Excess is harmful. We get plenty of it from vegetables, and other foods.
