Aiden and Anais swaddling blankets. http://www.adenandanais.com/shop/classic.aspx
They are huge! And I've honestly not used another light weight blanket since I bought them. In fact, I'm STILL using them with my 18 month old. :) Except now we use them for the stroller, and just as a lightweight cover blanket at night.
They pack down well into a diaper bag. They are the perfect gift.
I always give Aden and Anais blankets (they are a little spendy for the new parents to splurge on, often) or trumpette socks. I also sometimes get people the AAP guide to the 1st year (very reliable resource).
My favorite gifts were diapers and wipes! If you want something a little more fun, a tummy time mat is a great gift. Tummy time is very important to prevent flat head now that babies are put to sleep on their backs.
Honestly, I appreciate anything! I know people tend to say they get a lot of clothes so don't do that, but I didn't buy any myself and I'm hoping not to, so I love recieving some cute baby clothes!
I got a gift certificate to The Picture People so I can get photos of the baby done after she's born. I am super excited about that.
Hm...So far I have received the Pack 'n Play, Travel system, swing, boppy pillow and a Moby Wrap sling...also, some of those towels with the hood on them and some diapers and wipes. I love it all, but this is our first baby and our baby shower is not until August 7th so I am not sure exactly what we will be getting. I'm just excited about it all. My DH is very excited to see if anyone gets us this "Twilight Turtle" projector thing...it projects stars on the ceiling and it is supposed to help kids not be afraid of the dark. It's made by Cloud B. They have some awesome products. I'm sure the couple will appreciate anything you give them. I have also heard some ladies at work say the thing they appreciated most was having people bring their family dinner (prepped and ready to freeze/bake, or piping hot ready to eat...just be sur to let them know you are cooking if you bring it hot).
My favorite gift was some burp cloths that were actually cloth diapers but the lady sewed some fabric on the middle strip. They were so cute and are super absorbant! She also bought a plain white onesie and sewed a fabric looking tie on the front.
This might not be an option for you, but when one of my bffs had her baby, I cooked up about 2 weeks worth of healthy, one-dish meals (chili, lasagna, etc.) and froze them in single-serving microwaveable containers (glass, not plastic, due to chemical leaching). I'm not a mom so I can't say whether it was the best thing I could have done, but she said it just about saved her life one week!

I always get stuck thinking of a new baby type gift to give new parents. I'm not close enough that I was invited to a their baby shower (couldn't find a registry anywhere), but I'd like to get this particular couple (old family friends) something for them or their new baby.
What did you receive that you really appreciated? (The baby will be about 7 weeks, by the time I end up giving the gift.)
