(Closed) Prilosec and TTC?

I shave been taking nexium and Prilosec (not at the same time) for years. I went off of it all a few months ago before we start TTC and it isn’t that bad. Just watch what you eat and avoid the things that make you feel awful. For me that’s red sauce and garlic and onions. Sometimes even cheese. There are days that I eat those things and just prepare myself for feeling awful. Ask your doctor what you can use to treat the heartburn. My stepsister had awful heartburn her entire pregnancy and she was allowed to take a liquid, Maalox or Mylanta, I can’t remember which. Hers turned out to be related to her gall bladder. Anyway, yes we do have to go off those medicines and it’s going to suck. Invest in breath mints because your breath will smell like the acid.

I took prilosec as well, but stopped the month we started TTC.  I was on a very high dose -2 in the morning, 2 at night, and one before lunch if I had any breakthrough heartburn!  I switched to tums and started watching my diet a little better.  I have found that vinegar based foods (bbq, certain dressings) and fatty or fried foods irritate me more than anything else.  Oh, and peppers & onions.  No bueno 🙁

Prilosec is a category C drug, which means there are insufficient studies on pregnant women.  I was told that if the benefits outweigh the risks that they would have me start it back up again (like if I get an ulcer or something), but I’ve been able to manage my reflux with tums & diet moderation.  I’m early in my third trimester now and so far, so good!

@DaneLady:  yes altering my diet is the biggest thing. No onions, only light garlic, no fried food from a restaurant althohome lightly fried food at home seems to be ok. Anything tomato based will set me off in an instant except ketchup. That means no pasta sauce, no pizza sauce, no tomato based soups or stews. I can do spicy foods in moderation of they aren’t tomato based but I try to stay away from those too.
