Wow, that adds up fast. Will your photographer allow you rights to reproduce the photos on your own?
@MissPine: Nope, only if I join this photosharing website that costs $400 a year he will.
If you're ordering from the photographer, it sounds reasonable. My photographer charges $15 for 4x6 and $20 for 5x7.
To me that seems kind of high, but we went through an up and coming photographer, and her prices are a little less than most. Like PP said, do you have the rights to print them on your own?
I made sure I had a photographer that included the disc with full sized images, so I can't entirely answer that. But my boudoir photos started at $38 for an 8x10, and my university grad photos were $40 per sheet (2 5x7s), so I suppose that it is about on par.
The one we hired for the wedding does include a disc with rights. I was just so bummed. Looks like I'll be ordering like 3 engagement pictures, lol.
I think that's pretty high. I've seen $8-10 for 4x6, but $14 seems like a lot!
Do they offer any packages or discount if you order so many prints?
Maybe instead of putting them in your Christmas cards, you can buy a digital picture from the photographer and make it part of the card. Then order several cards from a company (like Vista Prink or Walgreens) to send out. Would they allow that?!?
Hmm not sure. Our photographer included a disc with full size images and full reproduction rights. But that price does sound very high.
I would recommend not ordering pics and scanning them - they are the photog's property if you did not have a printing release as part of your contract! Just an FYI, wouldn't want to see any issues come up with you and your photog before the wedding!
Scanning them with the intent to reproduce them would be Copyright Infringement and punishable in Federal courts with lots of fines and possible jail time. Not really worth it over a $14 print if you ask me.
$14 for a 4x6 isn't that expensive. A lot of photographers charge the same price for a 4x6 as an 8x10, The print cost is inexpensive, but the markup is cover the time for prep and retouch. However, if you are order many copies of the same image, your photographer should be giving you a hefty discount. Discuss this.

We got our engagement photos taken and to my surprise, they are $14 for 1 4X6. So if I wanted to send them off in my Christmas cards, that is hundreds of dollars. And the prices just go up from there. Just wondering if this is normal. Any insight would be awesome.
