Hi bees! I'm having my e-pics done June 22, and made an appt to have my make up done...I was thinking it would be great for the pics but also act as a trial run. But now I'm wondering if that is "weird" for some reason - I want to look natural in my e-pics and not too made up. IDK, I'm probably just second guessing details that don't matter. Any thoughts or anyone else done pro make up or hair for e-pics?

I didn't do it.  I'm not a huge makeup person and I knew I was going to go all out for the wedding but I wanted to look more like myself for the engagement pictures.

Some women get professional makeup done (usually at a dept store makeup counter which is inexpensive, if not free, which can also be used for wedding day makeup) and others do their own. There is no right or wrong since it's personal preference.

I would say it depends on the style of your engagement pictures. Our photographer works in a style that focuses on expression (natural shots) rather than "portraits," so it didn't matter much. Still, I did spend quite a bit of time searching for the perfect makeup and making sure it was applied well.

Are you having bridal portraits? Maybe that would be a better time to have your makeup trial... it makes sense to have all the makeup on with the wedding dress. With engagement photo makeup, it will be tempting to try and match whatever you're wearing that day, so it might not work well as a trial.

I did this for my e-pics last year.  I think it's a great idea, but I'll be honest with you.  It was such a mistake for me.  I ended up going with a different makeup artist because my makeup was TERRIBLE for my e-pics, and now I don't like my e-pics because of it.

With that being said, I think it's a great idea to see how you'll look on film because sometimes you need a lot of makeup on to look good on camera.  A professional makeup artist knows this and can really provide you with a realistic look.  And I think it's nice to kill two birds with one stone.

I think it depends on how good you are at makeup, tbh.  I think (hope?) that I do my makeup well enough on a day-to-day basis, but I don't like the way it looks in a lot of photos, and I don't know how to make it more noticeable without crossing into clown territory.  So for me, prof makeup happens a LOT (whenever I am having pics done / going anywhere super-fancy etc).

I really trust and like my makeup artist though - if you've never been to this pro, you may not like what they do, as pp have mentioned.  Definitely something to think about.

I had my makeup and hair trial done for my e-pics and I was very happy with the results.  It photographed really beautifully.  At first I thought the makeup was way too thick and smokey (I don't usually wear that much makeup), but it photographed so well-- I'm glad I did it.  :)

I mean, do it if you want. But I didn't ...I did my own makeup...which ended up looking like I had no makeup! lol.

I used my photographer's Mary Kay lady whom she highly recommended. Free of charge. It worked out well, but I'll be using my (very affordable!) makeup artist that I'm using for the wedding when I get the bridal and boudoir pics done.

I got my make up an hair done for our e-pics. My make up was done very light with very 'natural' look that when captured on camera you can't even tell - - It was worth every penny to me. My make up wasn't done the way its gonna be for my wedding nor was my hair done the way its gonna be for my wedding...

Here are our pics so you can see how it looked - - the fake eyelashes were my favorite part, LOL

Hey, thanks bees for the advice! I think I'm gonna try it...I know this makeup artist (had waxes doen by her) and she works at a very reputable salon, so I feel comfortable going there. if I hate it, I'll have time to remove/re-do before the pics.

Jackie-o...love your pics! So natural and lovely. Hope mine turn out that good!

I had both my hair and makeup done--I've only seen a few of the pics so far, but I'm so glad that I had pro makeup. One thing that both the makeup artist and my photographer said was that appropriate makeup can help make sure that none of your features are lost or washed out. The photographer agreed that the pro makeup really made my eyes pop and gave me a clear complexion. My makeup looked more like evening makeup in person but I don't think it looks unnatural in the photos. With that said, if you know what you're doing you can totally do it yourself or stop by a makeup counter. I had an affordable option and the funds to do it and it helped me feel pretty and ready to be in front of the camera.

Oh, and I should mention that neither my makeup/hair were a trial for the wedding. Both were in a different style. Probably less important for makeup than for hair, but you might not want to be styled the same way for both.
