From my understanding, anything with a label is processed. I'm not 100% on that though.
@BoiledPNut: I read that and I was really hoping taht was not true. I guess what I really need to know is what processed foods are going to make me gain weight....
I think a lot of deli cheeses are processed because they are called "cheese products" on the labels. My mom says that if you stick to the far walls of the grocery store, not the center shelves, you're better off. I would love to eat like this... I just don't know if it's feasible budget wise. Go you!
We eat like this 90% of the time (because sometimes, TJ frozen foods or a bowl of cereal is needed :) We avoid almost anything that comes in a box, and make most everything from scratch (including bread, hummus, etc).
Our biggest issue is time, not budget. We can eat a well-balanced diet, all organic fruits and veggies, and grass-fed organic beef, etc for about $250/month for two.
There are ways around some of the "no" foods you listed if you are making them yourself from raw ingredients. You can slice your own potatoes and make baked chips - all natural. You can bake things with whole wheat or other less or non-processed ingredients. You can make your own granola from raw ingredients - sooo much better than buying it in the store, and so easy! There are a lot of alternatives. It requires more work, but you feel sooo much better! My husband and I haven't gone 100% processed-free, but we are probably 85% there. It makes a huge difference in how you feel, and I find the home made stuff just tastes so much better!
@melisandescott: That's great! Right now I'm in grad school, so things are a little tight. I hope to make it work :)
@love108: oh, that is a good rule! Yeah, I am trying. However, I have to eat my greek yogurt and kefir. That is how I get my protein! Those things are on the outside of the grocery store.
@bestbuddies: That's what I mean :) I love greek yogurt. I'm not saying there's no processed food at all on the outside walls, but it's a rough way to avoid the really bad stuff.
When I avoid some processed foods, it's the heavily processed foods I avoid, like granola bars, Cheeze Whiz, etc. Healthy foods like yogurt, cheese, bread are processed but you can get very heaily processed variants and less processed ones.

@crayfish: wow, that sounds amazing. Is there anyway you could share some receipes with me? Or point me in the direction of a good website for those. I would LOVE to make everythign homemade. Budget si not an issue with us....our health is a priority and we can spend whatever is needed for healthy foods.

Some of you may have read my first post regarding me stop eating processed foods. However, I am struggling with what is processed and what I should stay away from. I plan on seeing a nutritionist but it will probably be another month. So, I was hoping in the meantime the hive could help! I know there are a lot of knowledgable and healthy bees in here. :D
I know I cannot eat cookies, cakes, crackers, chips. Those things are obvous. But, what about salad dressings and soy burgers?
Are these things that I should not be eating:

What about cheese?
So far today I have only had greek yogurt, fruit, carrots and humus. I am pretty hungry but strugglin' with what I can eat. I thought I understood processed foods thing but than I started to research it and I got really confused.
Thanks!
