SoonToBeeMartinez:  I think part of the fun of being engaged is being “upgraded” from a girlfriend to a fiancée. I called him by his “proper title” when I introduced him to people but around friends I’d usually just use his name. Unless they didn’t remember his name and gave me a funny look, at which point I’d proudly say “my fiancé”.

I call my fiancé by his name if I’m in a situation where people know his name and who he is. I use fiancé if I’m referring to him in other situations. He was “my boyfriend” for five years and Ill be damned if anyone makes me feel bad for using the term fiancé. You use whatever terminology you want.

SoonToBeeMartinez:  “fiance” is certainly the proper term, but I agree with your friends that is sounds sort of snobby. (There’s a Seinfeld clip on this which someone will probably post). I mostly avoided the problem by just using his name.
