Here’s my proposal story. I’m sorry it’s so long, but it’s definitely one for the books…
My SO and I have been together for 3 years. This past week was our anniversary and I was on high alert for the proposal. The reason for this was because he had ordered a ring in the summer and I knew that it was finally in his possession. Plus, he tends to like instant gratification and I knew he wouldn’t wait too much longer.
So yesterday was the most beautiful fall day. It was sunny, hot (this is Canada, in mid-October..), and the leaves on the trees were the most glorious colours. We decided earlier in the week to go for a walk in a provincial park with a number of trails and lakes. The idea of a proposal crossed my mind, but I had told myself it would be fine if it didn’t happen. My SO was also thinking of (and had planned) a proposal! On the walk, he was trying to find the perfect place to do it, and he was also trying to distract me so that he could set it up. His set up was going to involve tying the ring box to the harness of our dog.
We came to a lookout over the lake. It was an area where there were supposed to be beaver dams and I was really excited about the idea of seeing a beaver (wildlife sightings really turn my crank). While I was on high alert for a beaver, my SO was busy tying the ring box to our dog. All of a sudden, we see two men coming from the opposite direction (we hadn’t seen anyone the whole walk) and our dog got startled and started barking at them. He quickly calmed down and my SO’s plan was still underway. I turned back to my SO and our dog and thought they were just having a moment…my SO was kneeling down with his arm around the dog, so I start snapping pictures of the pair. My SO then spots a woman walking towards us in the distance. He’s worried about our dog reacting again, so he starts to rush things a bit. All of a sudden he is saying all these wonderfully sweet things to me and I still haven’t clued in at this point. He’s still on one knee with our dog and sends our dog over to me as he says, “Go take something to your mom…[full name – yes! One of my proposal wishes], will you marry me?”. I then spot the ring box, tears are welling up, I’m about to scream “YES OF COURSE!”…then all of a sudden, our dog spots the woman and kind of jolts. The rings box, which was tied to his harness by a ribbon (and not very securely because my SO was feeling a bit rushed at this point), falls and starts to tumble DOWN THE STEEP ROCK THAT WE WERE STANDING ON TOP OF!!!
There goes the ring box and my SO after it. It’s tumbling down this rock face, about 30 feet to go until the water. He’s trying to catch it before it hits the water but he’s not quick enough! UGH, my heart dropped and I can only imagine what my SO was thinking. He gets to the bottom most point of the rock that he can stand on and then there’s a 2-foot drop to the water. We see the ring box in the water, so there’s a moment of relief. Then…we look closer and realize that the ring box has opened and there is no ring in the box!! NO RING IN THE BOX!!! PANIC MODE!! HOLY SH*T!! We start scouring the rock face but no luck. Then, two young couples meet up with us and we recruit them to help look. Only a few minutes had passed at this point, but it’s feeling like forever, and NO RING! Then, we decide it must be in the water, so my SO strips down to his undies and very carefully gets into the water, trying his best not to disrupt the bottom of the lake. He grabs the ring box and sure enough, no ring. Then, he spotted the tiniest bit of metal, which looks straight-ish, like a fish hook. He gently took a hold of it, and HOLY MOLY THANK GOODNESS…it was the ring!!! He asked me to put it on immediately, then I said YES, kissed him, and helped him out of the water. One of the young couples took a picture for us, while we were still completely rattled and my SO was still half-naked.
My fiance (AHHHH!! Sounds to crazy!) have been laughing about the incident since, overwhelmed with happiness and feeling extremely lucky to have not lost the ring. What would have been a nice, romantic proposal ended up being a proposal calamity, with a happy ending!!
And of course, he are some photos for your viewing pleasure!
