I hate to be a debbie downer, because I am sure that Katie is a great person, with great intenstons, will have a great learning curve as she ventures into photography, and one day will make a fine photographer.
To be completely candid, I don't think she should be charging anything for weddings for several reasons:
1. It appears she never shot one yet
2. She says on her site she is a "natural light" photographer which typically is a fancy way of saying one of two things: 1) I don't know how to use a flash or 2) I don't own any flash equipment. -Both of which are required for wedding photography
3. Honestly, she should be doing )free Trade for CD (TFCD) shoots for her portrait sessions too and not charging anything and there is nothing wrong with that for someone just starting out. That will enable her to hone her skills, and add portfolio content. When she is ready, she will be able to charge close to "market" rates intead of 1) undercutting the real pro's, and 2) hurting herself in the long run when she tries to raise her prices as she gets the reputation of being the budget photographer on the block.
I don't see anything about wanting to do wedding photography at this time on her site. It sounds like she is doing the smart thing and trying to get some experience in other areas under her belt first, hopefully she knows she should second shoot some weddings as well first before offering those services. My recommendation is that no one "tempt" her with a wedding if she's not advertising for one. She's being smart, don't be the irresponsible one and tempt her into doing something she knows she's not ready for. And for the record, I think she has a good eye for childrens photography and her technical skill and post processing should improve with time as well. :)

I was doing my daily blog hopping when I came across this bit of interesting news: Katie Bower, who writes the amazing DIY home improvement blog Bower Power, has decided to take her passion from hobby to profession. You can read about it here. I'm pointing it out because she is a wonderful photographer AND - for those brides on a budget - is looking to build up a portfolio so her rates are low. So if you're in her area (I haven't been reading/paying attention long enough to know exactly where she is but I know it's in the South), check her out.
