I know what you mean! Whenever I see someone leaving the bathroom without washing their hands, I have to hold myself back from screaming WASH YOUR HANDS!!!!!!! I never touch a door when I have to leave, I usually push it open with my shoulder or I use a towel to pull it open. That is just the grossest thing ever.
I'm addicted to hand sanitizers. I wash my hands, dry them, put on hand sanitizer and then put on anti-bacterial hand lotion. So, I defintely feel ya on this front!
i have seen people IN MY OFFICE do it. I can't look at those people in the same way again. They might as well have just went to the bathroom in their cubicle for how I picture them these days. Across the board dis-gus-ting!
I usually take the sanatizer out of my purse as i leave the stall put some in my hand once i get out of the stall so people know I do clean my hands then i open the restroom door and then use the hand sanatizer. i prefer to wait until I am out of the restroom to use it. I hate it when people dont wash. Especially in a public setting and more so now with the flu. I had it and dont know if you can get it again, but I do not want to find out the hard way. Plus EWWW!!!
I'm amazed at the people who won't FLUSH, clearly did a #2 and STILL DIDN'T WASH!!! Ugh! Seriously, I turn off the faucet with a towel, use a different one to dry my hands, then use another one after that to open the door. And then I see those same people touching stuff all over whatever store I'm in. One of these days I'm going to absolutely SNAP on someone, and it won't be pretty.
I think I take a middle road on this. It is super gross when people don't wash their hands and I always always do... but beyond that I'm not opening door with my feet or anything. I've heard it isn't good to use too much antibacterial stuff because it can make your body used to it and it won't work when you really need it to or something?
I feel like I'm reasonably cautious with the hand washing and I do use antibacterial gel if I'm going to be eating and haven't had a chance to wash my hands, but other than that I don't worry about it. And I very very rarely get sick.
I'm pretty much the same way. I wash my hands a lot and get grossed out by touching stuff in public places. I can't stand it when my hands don't feel clean.
I was at an airport a few weeks ago and same thing happened! I was so shocked I actually said outloud, "GROSS!" Haha.... I don't know if she heard me or not, but I just couldn't believe it!
yeah Corgi, i don't go nuts about it, but I just really am disturbed when you witness someone not doing the basics. I'm a hand washer, and a sanitizer after the gas pump or before eating type of gal. But seeing those ladies I know for a fact don't wash their hands (which is so simple and takes so little time!) going in the candy dish really is icky.
This is timely! This literally just happened.
So there's a Gross Guy at work. I'll leave out the details, but from looking at him and observing him, you know hygiene and he have never friended each other on FB, you know?
So someone left a small bag of cookies in the break area. I am walking by and GG is the only person in the break area and is mauling the bag like a rabid racoon hitting a trash can in the middle of the night - touching everything in the bag to extract a single cookie.
GG takes his new snack and goes back to his cube.
I make a beeline for the area, fling the bag into the trash and declare, "YOU ARE WELCOME, EVERYONE!"
Yuck.
Keep in mind that she might have used the hand sanitizer in the stall or as she was kind of walking out. I do this most of the time. I think washing your hands in a dirty public restroom is pretty fruitless and hand sanitizer works better.
EWwwww. I can see skimping out once in awhile at home (guilty, i know, shame on me) but never in public. My mom is one of those people who doesn't always wash her hands. Oh i also pet my cats before i eat at home and don't wash my hands first. i'm sure it's icky. Anyways, I always hold out some sanitizer for her and give her a dirty look. She doesn't think it's gross! I always use sanitizer in public places....but I get paranoid that someone will think I didn't use it so I whip it out in plain view, lol. I don't want people to think i'm gross =]
Yea, I am also guilty of being a bit OCD. i dont touch the door or the stall doors or the faucets. I use either my foot for the doors or a napkin for the faucets.
You could never be too clean. :)
@EJS: hahahah I do that too! I try to make sure everyone sees me using it!
@Corgi: I am the same way with the hand sanitizers. I use it on a must have basis. I already have a weak immune system so I don't want to take all my bodies natural fighting ability, you know?
@hotchild: That is true, but this was a very elderly women (not saying the older generation doesn't use sanitizers) and first thing that went through my mind was she is in the risk group for H1N1 and not taking the extra precautions.
I just automatically think of people in food service. All of you have commented here and have seen such acts and how common place it is, it just makes me wonder if all employees who are preparing are food follow the "Employees must wash hands before returning to work" signs.
Ummmm yeah, people who prepare food aren't always that good at it. I mean, you're supposed to wash your hands between handling plates and touching food and everything. I know I rinsed my hands off after cleaning a plate and tossing it towards the rack, but I wiped myhands on my apron and went back out there. We only had one complaint the whole time i worked there about someone washing their hands first--we had a very hispanic salad bar lady who never washed her hands. One day a customer saw her and the manager had to explain to the salad bar lady. Unfortunately stuff was lost in transition. But mostly, touching peoples' half eaten food grossed us all out enough to wash our hands--we're worried about catching something from YOU, not the other way around.Your hands touch enough gross stuff that you are wearing gloves mostly anyways
If that grosses you out, make sure you wipe off all your own silverware in restaurants....
I saw one of the major, major people in my field not wash her hands at a conference and could barely stifle the cry of horror in my throat. Somehow I think that the powerful are above not washing their hands... why, oh why??
@MissACS - At my old job we had a Gross Guy too! hahaha.... He never washed his hands, reaked of cigarette smoke all the time, it was bad. We were a small office too, so if there was ever food to share, we would pass it around up front and have our fill before putting it back in the break room.....
I don't see the big deal guys! I don't wash my hands after I do "twosies"...
JUST KIDDING!!! Ugh! That is so gross. When I worked at a restaurant they got hand dryers to be more eco-friendly, and I was like, how will I open the door now? I don't do that all the time with towels to open the door, but when I have to dry my hands, I use my arm to push the paper towel dispenser, etc. That's the drawback of hand-dryers.
However they are dyson hand dryers aka "air blades" and they are amazing.
@corgitales, I hit Busy Beekeeper level with 6750+ posts....and the formatting is now a step down with a blanked out page. I'm not sure if it's supposed to be like that or if they haven't decided how to format the new levels since they've all been color blocked. The step down is kinda weird though =\
@ejs: I am completely grossed out by touching plates others have eaten off of. I wont even do it at home...If you want me to clean the plates off it has to be RIGHT after eating and only certain foods will I clean. If it sits there overnight or for a few hours forget about it!
I used to work at a Panera in HS and I would refuse to wash the dishes because we weren't aloud to wear gloves doing so since if people saw you bring new dishes out with gloves on from the back they assumed you were also washing and preparing their food with the same gloves. The managers knew that if they wanted me to wash the dishes (which was rarely, just if they needed extra help) I HAD to wear at least 3 pairs of gloves and stay in the back because that was the only way I did it. I would also not work on the food side and only in the bakery because I am afraid of certain foods (condiments) and they knew all I could do was pour some soup for people otherwise it was pushing my limits.
Side note: One time a coworker thought it would be funny to put salad dressing on my arm since they knew I was afraid of it. I screamed, went in the back to wash it off and where the dressing was I had broken out in a huge rash! Such an irrational fear
This guy? Doesn't bathe or wash his hair. I almost bumped into him in the hall a couple days ago and I think I actually recoiled away from him. If I had been next to a plate glass window I can't say I wouldn't have inadvertantly thrown myself through the window to avoid him.
On one hand, I sort of feel bad for him because he seems to want to say hi to people in the hall and be social. If everyone is like me, he is greeting with a lot of "wow, this floor is capitivating, I think I'll just stare at it to avoid uncomfortable greeting with GG."
But on the other hand? "Hi. It's called soap. It's been around for hundreds of years. They even have coupons for it now. Give it a whirl."
I'm not obsessed with hand washing but I do not touch public bathroom door handles whenever I can avoid it (thank you, paper towels) and I wash my hands at what I consider suitable intervals - once I'm off the bus in the morning and have arrived at work, once I'm home in the evening and off the bus (again!), in restaurants before eating, anytime I've handled something icky like the pump at the gas station or after I've pet an animal (not immediately but eventually).
I work in an area where a sink with warm water and soap in our little kitchenette is five steps from a hand sanitizer dispenser and I don't know why people rather use the sanitizer when there's soap and water right there! I look at hand sanitizer as something of a last resort but I know I'm in the minority!
Between getting enough sleep, taking my vitamins and washing my hands regularly I am hoping to avoid getting sick this season - we shall see!!!
@ejs: I was going to ask you about your formatting! I thought something was wrong with it but then realized you moved up a level!!
@MissACS: I actually went to college with a kid who didn't bath, wear shoes, and wore the same bright yellow shirt and green shorts EVERYDAY!! He was really smart, had his own research project as an incoming freshman and grants. The way he dressed had something to do with honoring his mother or something like that. He was a nice guy (he felt bad one time because this girl got a speeding ticket while driving for one of our field studies and he gave her cash to pay for it! Of course she didn't take it but it didn't even have to do with him). He smelled so bad tho...I remember we had to put all the windows down on ours trips because of the smell. He also was forced to wear flip flops in the dining hall and that was the ONLY time he wore any type of shoes...it could be the middle of winter, snow on the ground, and he was running to class with no shoes on!!
I totally agree with a lot of you guys on here. I think that people who don't wash their hands after coming out of the washroom is pretty gross. I noticed a lot of you said you have that urge to yell out at them to wash their hands and I get that to. I don't understand why people can just not take a few minutes out of their time to wash their hands because once they don't the people who actually do have the chance of getting all the germs that are sitting on that door handle or anywhere people have put their hands. I think people should really start considrering taking the time to wash their hands.
i use hand sanitizer because soap dries out my hands more, but i usually dont pull it out till im on my way out of the restroom.
it was probably me. now im insecure about people looking at me when i walk out.
eek
There is one lady at my office who NEVER washes her hands. I get way grossed out by this and as a result of this I have to wash my hands before and after using the bathroom. I also use the paper towel to open the door and then carry it down the hall to throw away in my office so there is no chance of contamination.
just as a side, I'm not really offended, but as someone who is diagnosed with and medicated for obsessive compulsive disorder it can be sometimes hurtful to hear people describing their aversion to germs (which anyone should have) as OCD. OCD can be a pretty debilitating mental illness to cope with because of how it orders your life and influences your actions, so please don't make light of it just because you don't want to touch gross things. Not trying to lecture, just making a sensitivity point.

So I just got home from the store and unfortunately I had to use the public restroom. I try to avoid as much as possible but sometimes you just gotta go...anyway...
When I was done and washing my hands, another women left the rest room straight from the stall!! No stoping to wash her hands! Ew! Ok I could understand if she like whipped out some Perrell or something, but no NOTHING, just left the restroom without a care in the world.
Ok 1) There is a public health crisis right now and 2) that is just plain gross...I'm sorry.
I always use a paper towel to open the bathroom door when leaving. I also try to avoid touching the door itself. I'll sneak in after someone else or use my shoe to open it/hold it open for this very reason. It might be borderline OCD but seeing this act in action really makes me all the more glad I have that tendency.
Anyone else grossed out by this or have some weird bathroom tendencies?
