I haven't done one, but I've been to one and it was a really great night for a family that enjoys drinking! I think the trick is to work with the space you have - i.e. don't go for an "elegant evening fantasy" wedding if you're in a pub. You could try informal, vintage, etc, and I think any of those would be great. Would you be renting the place out or have a small space reserved or...?
@kag5079 I wouldn't go for an elegant fantasy for sure, we'd go for laid back feel, I was already planning a country chic themed wedding so that's easy to incorporate (mason jar candles, bunting banners, homemade favours, etc) so we could easily do that at a pub, wouldn't need to do much decorating, just add some candles and maybe some flowers here & there on tables (we were going with carnations in mason jars), we'd rent white linens for the tables and push them together to have a long table vs. little tables) and then do a sweetheart table for us.
We're looking at renting the whole place, it's not very big to begin with so we'd need the whole space.
HONEST OPINIONS PLEASE ....
If you received an invite to a wedding and saw it was at a pub would you be turned off?
An if you weren't and you came would you expect pub food? (We were thinking of giving a choice of Fish & Chips, Hot Roast Beef Sandwich with homemade chicken gravy & mashed potatoes or fries or Hot Roast Chicken sandwich with homemade chicken gravy and mashed potatoes or fries.
There would also be appetizer platters during cocktail hour (pub faire of course).
What do you think? (We'd rent white linens to run the table length (bench seats on 1 side and chairs on other side, not booths).
Personally I would love a pub wedding! So many weddings end up seeming the same (mine will be one of those lol, rustic, outdoors, mason jars, wildflowers, lol but I'm ok with that!) that I think it would be awesome to see something a bit off the beaten path! Plus it just sounds fun and it really seems to represent you guys!
I would be expecting pub food (which I love!) and probably a tasty beer :).
I would love to attend a pub wedding! And I would certainly want pub food while I am there. I think you will be providing your guests with a unique and awesome experience.
@lunathea Your wedding is exactly what we were planning in a location we didn't want to hold it ... we were doing it for his parents mostly, they don't like leaving the area they live in which means we had to drive 2 hours everytime we had a meeting with a vendor which was hard for us and now that he's laid off realistically we can't do the wedding our parents wanted and we're both more laid back people and pub people so this is US plus there is a ceremony locaiton that would be AMAZING for us (we're waiting to see if is available).
@MrsN2Be: LOL!!! I'm really glad that you chose something for you :). The thing that sold us on this place is it truly is 'us'. We love the outdoors, camping, hiking, hunting, (he just got me my first rifle for bird hunting for Xmas, holy hell am I a bad shot), cruising the backroads (aka grass/dirt trails through trees that we basically have to create ourselves lol!). But the real seller for me was 1) exposed wood beams and 2) FI gets to create a GIANT bonfire!
What decor and such are you planning!?
@lunathea exposed wood beams would be awesome!!! A bon fire is awesome!!!
Well the pub is pretty on its own (in it's own pub kinda way) however the seating is bench seats on 1 side of the tables and then chairs on the other side, they are small 4 person tables but pushed together to form a long table so I'd like to put white linens the length of the tables and 3 centrepieces (tall vases, with carnation pomander on the top & on the bottom of the vase a black ribbon with an smaller red ribbon and a fake tea light inside for a "romantic" feel and in between the vases my MOH is lending me her votive holders from her wedding (she's got like 120 of them) so I was going to place them kinda in a line between the tall centrepieces and then on the bar in the corners tall centrepieces (same as tables) and some small votives. For our table (sweetheart) some tulle on it and maybe some lights under the tulle, and on the door of the pub a carnation letter "N" and along the top of the bar I'm making some paper bunting.
Outside on the patio some tulle & lights along the banister and there are 3 stairs heading down to the patio so adding same tulle & lights and maybe a carnation pomander @ the end of the stair railing.
Simple yet pretty & romantic.

A pub soundsgreat! I want an invitation :) if I got one, I would be stoked to be going to a wedding that was different than all the other cookie cutter ones!
Sounds fun! I would definitely not be out off going. I would expect pub food, but would hope maybe for some veggies or fruit to lighten it up a bit. A choice of drinks is a good idea too.
Ummm if I got an invite for a pub wedding I would expect a laid back swinging party of a good time! Woot woot!!
I would pay to go to your wedding.
Seriously. That is an amazing idea. If I could persuade my manfriend to do that I definitely would.
Sorry to hear about your FI's job :(
We're having ours at an underground room in a chill wine bar downtown, and we don't even drink wine! Our invitations will say that the wedding and reception are being held at "Insert Wine Joint Name Here." If people don't like it, they can just be judgy and not come. :p
Picked it because they have awesome food, it was within our budget, and mostly, they were EXCITED to have our little 40 person wedding.
I don't have any illusions that it's going to be the most elegant wedding, but it'll sure be fun, and I'm even going to try to glam it up a bit :)
Have fun! This might be the best thing that happened to your wedding.
I'm a FMIL and I love that idea of a pub reception! We attended a reception at a brewery a few years ago and really enoyed it! No special decorations were used though, so I can't be of help there.
@kerensa We are going to have a salad option as well (instead of fries or potatoes) also Veggies Platters & Fruit Platters during cocktail hour (with some more Pub style appetizers).
We're waiting on a price for food before we decide so fingers crossed!!
I would be stoked if I got an invite to a pub wedding! We wanted some similar, but because of (stuffy) family we are doing a more conventional reception, and then (with me still in my gorgeous gown) we are walking a couple blocks over a row of bars and pubs :)
I love it! I'd be super excited to get that invitation! (and I don't drink lol)
I love pubs, I love beer, I would so overjoyed to go to a pub reception.
Thanks so much!! I feel much better now knowing that I'm not doing something too crazy!!
Fingers crossed he gives us a good price. :)

Ok last night I posted about doing a Civil Ceremony & then a symbolic ceremony down south but MrN & I decided that we don't want to do that.
We have a Church & reception hall booked (deposits due in 2 weeks) but MrN got laid off so financially we don't know if we can afford to have that wedding (food alone is a HUGE chunk of our budget). We don't know when MrN will be back to work so we were considering having our reception at a local pub that MrN & I love, it's a real pub, not a chain of pubs (which we don't really consider pubs).
His family is Scottish & Irish and mine is British SO we're not thinking a pub will be an issue! LoL
This is a small neighbourhood pub, can fit 100 people maximum, it's not trashy looking, it's tasteful (as tasteful as a pub can be). MrN is going to talk to the owner tomorrow about cost for food and if he's do a reduced cost bar menu for specific drinks (i.e. 2 kinds of beer and 1 or 2 other non-beer drinks) then if guests want other drinks that's regular price.
Has anyone had a wedding reception at a pub? If so do you have pictures you'd be willing to share and suggestions would be great for decor.
Thanks Bee's
