Just out of curiosity... Was your proposal public or private? Day or night? Local or vacation? Which do you prefer? I love hearing proposal stories!
(Mine was private)
Mine was a semi-private proposal (there may have been like 2 people walking somewhere but we didn't see them) at sunset out on a rock on a beach on a vacation to Rhode Island. I thought it was perfect for us that nobody was really around since we're both more private people. I find it interesting though that when it's talked about my fiance's parents are a lot more impressed with his brother proposing in public in the middle of a pub on their vacation. I feel like it just depends on the people as to which is right.
FI did it in private, and I loved it. I got to scream happily a bit (even though I was completely expecting it), and we didn't have to worry about anyone being around us. It also gave us a chance to savor it a bit before we got other people involved.
@jo.lee: I understand screaming happily! I fully tackled FI when he proposed! He had to peel me off him to remind me there was a ring!
Mine was private! We were on these cliffs at Acadia National Park at sunrise. It was very romantic and very private!
@pebble: Haha you tackled him! That would have been bad if I had - we would have plunged 300 feet down sharp rocks into the freezing cold Atlantic. How did you forget about the ring?!
@afuturemrsl: it is kind of a long story! I am a HUGE football girl... so when my FI told me he had a surprise in the bedroom for me (at a hotel) I ran in to find a jersey with my lucky # and HIS last name on it! I immediately put it on and was ecstatic... when I turned around he said, "You can only wear it if youll be my wife!" I was just so excited about the proposal and the jersey that I just tackled him and didnt think about it!!! Silly, silly me! =)
And Im very glad you didnt tackle him!!
Mine was private. I'm not big on being the center of attention so it was perfect:)
@pebble: Haha. That sounds PERFECT! How adorable is the jersey technique?!
Mine was in front of a bunch of friends and family. It was super exciting and romantic, but I do wish it had been a little more private. He had asked them to stay on the other side of the cottage while he proposed except one friend taking pictures, but everyone ran around and awkwardly watched us anyway. It was wonderful though!
Vacation, day on a somewhat secluded beach we had to hike to. There were maybe 20 people there and he was taking pictures and taking soooooo long and I was getting really annoyed because we had another half of the hike to do. Turns out he was just waiting for most of the people to leave. So he had to stop me as I was walking away from the beach back to the trail (trying to get him to hurry up - lol!) so he could propose. A couple of people up towards the trail realized what was going on and whistled and hooted. It was fun. And i was totally surprised. Then I pushed him on the rest of the hike and he was so sore he couldn't walk for two days. How's that for a thank you?!
Semi-private for us! It was on the 18th hole of a golf course, so we were the only ones in the immediate area. However, the golf club was on to the proposal, and had placed the ring by the cup... so staff were watching, and a few other golfers were watching from the clubhouse. It felt very private to us thought until people started clapping, and the staff brought down champagne!
It was public, but no one was around - on the beach on a sunny but chilly day in early May.
Just us two - in the kitchen. I was a little bit annoyed b/c he didn't get down on one knee :) I made him get down on his knee and ask again! He did manage to totally surprise me though.
We went out to dinner w/ both sets of parents. Everyone said he was going to propose then but I said no because I didn't want something like that and it wasn't a fancy dinner - just something "regular".
On our way home he said he wanted to stop for some wine/beer and then while we were browsing he said he wanted to "try" some champagne so we got a $5 bottle of champagne to "try" -- so cheap! hahahaha
We went home and we were supposed to be going out w/ some friends after dinner but I was stuffed from dinner so I threw on some PJs - which FI was trying desperately for me to leave my regular clothes on! He then "popped" the question after pouring some champagne!
I gave him some requirements though: NO holidays/birthday proposals and NO proposal in a public place and NO proposing in fron of our friend or family. It was perfect!
Public, evening, while we were all dressed up and standing in a fairly busy square in Seattle near Christmas. My fiance knew me well enough to know that I'd want to be dressed up to go out and celebrate afterward and that something quiet or at at home wouldn't mark the occasion enough for me. I wanted it to seem like the most momentous occasion ever, and it did! There weren't a *ton* of people around, but those that were there clapped and cheered and congratulated us which was a ton of fun.
Public place, not lots of people around. The night of the first snow of winter we both got out of work early for snow so he asked if I wanted to go to these botanical gardens that we have in PA that always have a fabulous christmas display (it was December). I should have known something was up because looking at flowers is so not something he would ever want to do! I knew that a proposal was coming sometime soon but I figured he was going to do it at our anniversary which is in early January (to throw me off of expecting a christmas proposal). I thought I had him figured out but I was wrong!
After touring the place for about 2 hours and getting snowed on, I was ready to head back to the car...I was freezing but he kept walking me in circles. I was getting annoyed and ready to start flipping out (because he has no sense of direction and was ignoring my directions back to the car). I'm glad I didn't because he was going in circles to find a "good spot". All of a sudden he got down on one knee and asked. I was so shocked that I made him kneel in the snow while I said "OH MY GOD!" a million times. I didn't even pay attention to what the ring looked like (it was dark out), but I do think its funny that he had to take my gloves off before putting the ring on my finger. I remember I was really upset though because I forgot my camera (which I usually keep in my purse), and I even mentioned on the way there that I couldn't believe I forgot my camera because I wanted to take pictures of the flower displays.
Mine was in public with not many people around. I remember FI looking around to see if anyone was watching before he got down on one knee, lol. I'm glad that's how it worked out because I would have been embarassed by any attention from onlookers! It was also local and during the day.
Mine was under a waterfall when we were camping. There were 3 or 4 people around who saw the whole thing and cheered for us when I said yes, but it wasn't awkward or anything. I was so happy, it was like we were in our own little world and nothing could faze me.
We were technically in a public place, but no one was around. He took me up a local mountain on our anniversary and led me to this lookout point. I had NO clue what was going on. He read me this beautiful note he'd written and then got down on one knee. It just occured to me now that it was snowy outside and he must have gotten his knee all wet hehe.
Ours was in a dining room on our resort in the Dominican Republic after the New Years Eve gala supper. He was soo nervous and waited until most of the people had left the dining room though so no one was really around except for his sister and her hubs who were vacationing with us and recorded the whole thing on video :)
we met online and our first meeting was at a starbucks and he took me back to that same starbucks and proposed to me and there were so many people around....it was the most romantic thing anyone has ever done! I just love my FI and I can not wait to take his name and spend the rest of my life with him!!!
public place with lots of people around, but so quiet no one knew...so actually it was private in public place with lots of people!
He proposed on Valentine's day right before a movie came on in the movie theater:)
we had over 100 people over at our home theater for Superbowl and he proposed at half time. (had asked a friend to pause dvr when he saw us up front) so although it wasnt a public place, it was pretty public. i didnt know everyone there, some were his parents friends, some were friends of friends and some (most importantly) were my family/friends.
everyone was yelling and hollaring so loud, no one but i could hear him. (imagine 100 half drinking football fans at halftime)
i wouldnt have asked for it any different.
FI proposed to me on the beach but it was around 11pm so there were only a few people around
my fiance proposed in our apartment...just the two of us. i told him if he proposed in a public place, i would embarass him as much as he embarassed me and say no(lol i probably wouldn't). it was nothing romantical, but perfect for us. :O)
My fiance proposed on the rocks in front of our favorite lighthouse. We stood side-by-side looking at the ocean, and I remember than he craned his neck around a few times -- only after he proposed did I realize he was checking for people! So, we were all alone for the proposal, then once we got back into the car to warm up and make phonecalls a few other cars pulled up.
We like to say it was "just us and the seagulls"!
My husband proposed in front of the Taj Mahal in India. We were surrounded by thousands of people, but no one had any idea what was going on, so it didn't feel super-public. I wouldn't have had it any other way!
Mine was at a bar, local for me, 45 min drive for Mr.TKE. Our 3 friends saw it and the bar wasn't paying attention because we were drunk, lol
I'm a fan of private proposals, but DH proposed in a park. People were near us and NOBODY saw him propose, it was pretty cool. There was a family even eating a picnic near us! =]
My FI sent me on a scavenger hunt. I knew it was coming, but I didn't know that when I found him at the end my entire family would be there. (immediate, parents, bros and sis), my 4 yr old son, and his parents and my uncle (he lives with my FI and I)
He also has set up a table with a beautiful centerpiece and cheese, meats and crackers and he got champagne for everyone and sparkling juice for my 4 yr old and my uncle (he in AA). I loved that he thought of every detail.
It was so special that my family got to witness the proposal, especially my son.
Mine was in a public place, but a private proposal. We were camping and went on a hike to a very pretty spot, a suspension bridge. My hubby knew that I don't like to be center of attention, so it was an obvious decision for him to make it private.
Ours was private..I was waiting for him to get home from work and he walked through the door and said he had something for me..when he got down on one knee and proposed, I don't think I could have been any more suprised then I was,it was perfect. It was also nice to cozy up on the couch the rest of the night and call all of our family and friends with the news!
mine was public but private. we were at a resort in sedona with his family but our"condos" were away from eachother. we kept walking back and forth between rooms for vearious reasons and looking at the stars. living in phoenix we dont see many of those. i saw a shooting star, made a wish and he drilled me to find out what my wish was. when i finally ltold him i wanted us to be together forever (which has been every shooting start since we met) he asked if we were married would that count and thats how it happened! i asked him (the next morning after making about a million screaming phone calls telling everyone i knew i was engaged) how he knew right then was the moment and he said we would have walked back and forth all night if we had too lol
Mine was at a beach that we always go to, but after dinner so there weren't a ton of people around. He took me down to skip rocks and then we sat on a log. Somebody saw and took a picture, which I still think it really weird... since they didn't offer it to us or anything.
Ours was in a restaurant, but FI had told them he would be proposing and they gave us a very quiet table. One other table saw us and sent over some champagne, but otherwise no one else noticed us.
It was the restaurant we had our first date in, and seeing as we have both since moved to another city, it was a really lovely touch to go back. A complete surprise for me, too!
Regardless of how he proposes, it will be special...but, my family is so important to me, I'd love to have them share the experience with us!!
Ours was private (when he asked) but then we had dinner with family immediately afterward so...it was pretty public. Our waiters sang us an "engagement song" - which was wonderfully embarrassing.
ours was in front of the fire station in front of everyone....if you have not seen the youtube video...
