@ChocolateLime:  Try gingerale. It sounds weird, but it adds a little extra to the taste and makes it very nice and tender. Cover the meat completely with it, and once its done drain and shred. This also works awesome for chicken.

@ChocolateLime:  Honestly, I just throw in the pork with some BBQ sauce and cook it on low. It turns out great! I even used pork tenderloin instead of shoulder in a pinch the other day, and my SO (the pickiest person ever) loved it! I’ve heard of putting in a can of soda like PP mentioned, but I haven’t tried that yet.

Put your pork and a can/bottle of root beer. Cook until the meat is falling off the bone (I use pork shoulder, but pork butt is also good). Add the barbecue sauce (I use Sweet Baby Ray’s) and cook about 30 minutes more. Then eat! SO GOOD and so easy. I make pulled pork all the time.

@annb9:  I do exactly this. I’ve used Coca Cola before in place of the Root Beer and that works also. I use a mix of Sweet and Spicy Sweet Baby Rays and their Original.

Oh, I also drain the meat before adding the BBQ sauce. So, cook in liquid until done, drain, shred pork, then add BBQ sauce.

@ChocolateLime:  I usually just put the pork in the crock pot then pour over a can (12 oz) of regular Barq’s root beer (not diet!)  If you can’t find root beer, use regular Coke (again, not diet because the artificial sweetener tastes awful with the meat.)

After adding the soda, set the temp to low and let it cook 8+ hours.  Drain the water/soda off the meat.  Use forks to shred the pork.  Add in your favorite BBQ sauce to flavor and serve!

@ChocolateLime:  Yes, don’t add the BBQ sauce until it’s done cooking and the meat has been shredded, it doesn’t come out right (I’ve made that mistake, and while it’ comes out fine, it’s definitely not as good).

Root beer is a kind of soda made from the sassafras plant…maybe they don’t have it in the UK? I’ve never tried it with ginger ale, but that could be good!

@ChocolateLime:

              I put water in with the meat to cook it, I drain it when I pull the meat and than I add Rootbeer to add moisture back to the meat. Than after that I add the BBQ sauce. I originally was using rootbeer to cook my meat but it was a waste of pop and it wasn’t adding any flavour to the meat. When I added it to moisten the meat back up after being pulled, it added more flavour. Than I add the sauce and all is good!

Dr. Pepper works well too.

Season pork with salt and pepper. Place it in the crockpot. Pour 1 can of cola (regular coke of pepsi, no diet) or root beer over top. Cook, covered, on low for 9ish hours. Drain, shred, cover in BBQ sauce, and enjoy.

We do it with water (not enough to cover), a sliced onion, a bunch of chili powder and ground cumin and coriander and some salt and pepper.
