I have not been to Punta Cana, but I have been to Cancun and another resort town in the DR, Puerto Plata. One thing I noticed in Cancun was that it was VERY windy. My hat was blown off and the waves were quite big because of the wind. We were there in the spring. I don’t know if it is always windy, but if it is that could make a beach ceremony a bit uncomfortable. I don’t remember much wind in Puerto Plata, and we were there in the spring as well.

I know this isn’t one of your options, but have you considered Cabo San Lucas instead of Cancun?  My ex-husband and I did two things right–created a beautiful daughter and had an incredible destination wedding, which included just the two of us.  Having been to both Punta Cana and Cancun, I would say neither would get me too excited about having a wedding there.  If I can find the planner’s information I’ll PM it to you.  She was so awesome, getting us the paperwork we needed in advance, taking us to get the blood tests (this was 1999 so not sure if they’re still required or not), having a cake, flowers, band, photographer, etc. ready to go for us!

The backdrop with the famous rock formation, “Al Arco,” was such a dramatic and picturesque addition to the overall feel of the ceremony.

Another idea (not sure where you live) is getting married in a small town like Seaside, FL.  My best friend got married there, and her family rented a few homes for the four-day event.  In between rehersal, wedding dinner, etc., we got to enjoy riding bikes and the beautiful beaches there.  Theose beautiful homes can be pretty pricy though, but perhaps in the “off” season not as bad.

Good luck with whatever you choose!

I haven’t been to Cancun, just Puerto Vallarta. I would pick Punta Cana. The beaches there were absolutely beautiful and everything just seemed calmer. Can you try and pick a resort that’s on a different part of the beach? I was on Uvera Alto and didn’t see sea grass and spent quite a bunch of time in the water.

I’ve been to both multiple times and I would highly recommend Punta Cana for your honeymoon. Both times that I have gone to cancun was to party with friends and both times to punta Cana was with a significant other. I did make the mistake of going to both places during spring break season and it was so wild so I would make sure not to go during that time. (There were naked girls running down the hallway… Literally.) The colonial majestic in Punta Cana was hands down the nicest resort I have ever stayed in and not to mention the water is ridiculously beautiful!!

I haven’t been to Cancun, but we did our honeymoon in Punta Cana and I LOVED it. I didn’t notice seawood when I was there end of Oct/early Nov. There were more of the round balls that looked like tree nuts than seaweed. The beaches were gorgeous and everyone was very friendly. Now I can’t compare it to your other option, but if I were a guest I’d be all over Punta Cana!!!

OK so I haven’t been to the DR (really want to though) but have been to Cancun 3 times (all in Dec/Jan)… the poster above was right that Cancun can be windy and the strip where most of the resorts are located can get some pretty heavy surf. We actually had to take a bus to a more “local” beach away from the resorts just to find some calmer water where my mom could go in (her arm was in a cast at the time).

That said however, we had a great time at our resort, the food was excellent, the Mayan ruins on the Yucatan are awesome, and we have had very good experiences there overall. You are right though, that the main resort strip is very Americanized, and it doesn’t exactly shout “destination wedding” to me. As much as I enjoyed Cancun, I would probably choose some other place we’ve been to in the Caribbean or Florida for a DW.

mdcmod:  We were at the Majestic Elegance. I think it’s right next to the Colonial actually.
