@mdcmod:  I personally love Riviera Maya. I wasn’t a huge fan of Punta Cana when I went, but that’s just my opinion.

Punta cana to me doesnt seem as romantic as maya..when i think of punta I just visualize a bunch of young people partying it up as most of my friends go there for spring break and such…LOVE the Mayan Ruins!

@mdcmod:  The water is BEAUITUFL in Riviera. Very blue. Overall just more picturesque than Punta Cana, in my opinion.

I can’t speak for Mexico as I’ve never been. I truly loved my vacation in Punta Cana a few years back however. I stayed at the Grande Bahia Principe Punta Cana. We saw two weddings while we were there and they were lovely. One on the beach and one further into the resort in this lovely garden gazebo. A college friend went a year later to get married there and I was her little insider with any info, directions etc. They had a lovely time.

It really depends on what you’re looking for. Mexico tends to be a touch more budget friendly than DR when it comes to weddings from what I’ve heard. This may not be 100% true in all cases of course.

@mdcmod:

I have been to Punta Cana, Cancun, and the Riviera Maya.  I think that the water and beaches in PC are by far the most beautiful.  The water in Cancun is a bit prettier than in the RM; the Riviera doesn’t have those powdery, white sand beaches.  The beaches are still beautiful – just not as beautiful as PC where the water is super calm and you can see the bottom of the ocean when you’re in 30+ feet of water!

With that being said, I agree completely with your travel agent, RM is much easier and cheaper to get to than PC.  Also, the resorts in the Riviera are some of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen and I think the resorts tend to have much better food than anywhere else in Mexico.  My favorite resort there is the Valentin Imperial – but it’s adults only.

Another plus of the MR is that there’s a lot more to do outside of the resort, which would be nice if you have guests coming.  Xel-Ha is a fun day trip, the Mayan ruins are interesting, and Playa del Carmen is a cute little town with lots of restaurants and shopping.

If you want to avoid the party scene, I’d say stay away from Cancun…I feel like the city is one big party, no matter what time of year!

If you’re planning to have guests fly in, I think you need to keep in mind how practical it is for them to get there.

I totally see where you’re coming from – PC is gorgeous! If you were eloping by yourselves, I’d say 100% go for it!  But if you want to have people come, you want to make it as easy on them as possible.

@mdcmod:  she did. She loved it and said it was the perfect place for her and her now DH to get hitched. Their photos were gorgeous as well and the resort wedding coordinator was awesome and on the ball with answering questions, etc.

@mdcmod:  one thing to keep in mind and the reason we chose punta cana. if you want to have your legal ceremony while away, mexico is a LOT more intense with their restrictions… you have to give them a blood sample. for this reason only, we chose punta cana. also, a lot of guests didn’t want to travel to mexico just because of what you hear about it in the news. i think it’s silly but my dad was one of those people so i had to appease him 🙂

i’ve never been to either place you’re considering so i’m not overly picky. i think my wedding will be just fine.

If you like DR, and the two of you had an amazing trip there, then go there.  It has more personal significance to you.

@mdcmod:  I’ve been to both places, but it has been a few years so I can’t remember too many specifics about which food was better (and I went to the same chain hotel both times so my experience was pretty similar) but the ONE thing I have always complained about MR was the beach. Where we stayed it as pretty rocky and I just did not enjoy the beach at all (which is a big deal to me when I go on vacation). The Riviera was better for excursions, and I had a fabulous vacation but just couldn’t get over the beach. For that reason alone I will probably not go back to MR.

I am inclined to say that if you have been to punta cana and loved it, it may give you more piece of mind while planning the wedding to already know what to expect.

@mdcmod:  I find there is a lot more to do in Riviera Maya than Punta Cana- not sure if you and your guests would be interested in day trips or outings? If so, I’d go for Mexico. If you will just be at the resort, I would go for whatever makes more sense logistically- sounds like Mexico would be easier and cheaper for you:)

I have been to PC and RM/Cancun… Mexico wins hands down.  We actually were married and honeymooned at Secrets Maroma Beach, and the beach was gorgeous!  There are areas in Cancun and RM where the beach is a protected refuge, so it’s more “natural,” i.e. rocky, full of seaweed.  SMB is not one of those areas — it is amazing!  Here is a photo from our wedding — I know it’s a little hard to see, but it’s the only one I have right now.
