It will all just take time for them to adjust to one another, when we brought our puppy home it was more than a week before the oldest dog would even sniff at her.  Now they are best friends and even curl up together and sleep.

@Sweet.Sugar.Rose: From someone who acquired three dogs when we had three cats I know what you’re talking about.

They definitely will get a long eventually. My dogs and cats get along great and the cats were about 3 years old before we got the dogs. The dogs don’t bother the cats at all and the cats go whereever they please.

The baby gate is a good idea. It gives the cats a chance to get a piece of the house to themselves rather than under the bed, couch or other piece of furniture to hide.

Good luck! and congratulations on your adoption! Shelter pups are the best! πŸ™‚

Awww! Your dog is so cute! I’m sure it will just take some getting used to. The kitties will come around πŸ™‚

You might want to try restricting the area that the dog is allowed in for now.  Let the kitties (since they’ve had free range in the past) approach the dog and sniff her through the door or even a fence.  Try introducing each cat individually and praise the heck out of them and give them lots of treats (hoping they can associate good things with your doggie).  Try googling how to introduce dogs and cats to one another or contact your vet for more advice.  I’m sure you’ll find lots of great recommendations and everything will work out.  Good Luck!!!

@Sweet.Sugar.Rose: Thanks. I had my cat for 10 years. I adopted him at 6 weeks old in Queens, NY where I use to live.

I moved out here to California and he took off outside unnoticed when I had company over and he was attacked and killed by a coyote. They are awful out here.

My heart still hurts and is completely broken which will never heal. That was back in October. I cry all of the time when I think of him. He was my angel buns man. Miss him. πŸ™

@muckmoo1: So sad! I know what you mean though, I still cry about my dog that died 6 years ago sometimes.

@Sweet.Sugar.Rose: Just like you said, it takes time.  πŸ™‚  We just got a new puppy around christmas and our cats hid too but now they come out any play with her.  Just make sure you give them lots of love!
