I *think* that I've made a final decision on my dress and am very very excited!! Now, I'm trying to figure out where to buy it, in my current home state of VA or in CT, where I will be getting married. There are pros and cons to each, so I need some help deciding :-)

Buying in CT: Pros--great service so far, I have a friend who works in the shop who would definitely look out for me if there was an issue, shop has great relationship with the designer, wouldn't have to ship/carry dress to CT, they are having a trunk show in a few weeks and if I order during the trunk show I save 10%. Cons--getting in for fittings will be much tougher (though I have a few CT trips planned for food tastings, e-photos, etc)

Buying from local shop: Pros--easy to get in to the store for fittings, great service so far, they offer 10% off bridesmaids dresses if I buy my dress there. Cons--will have to ship or carry dress up to CT for wedding, I don't have an "in" at the shop, no trunk show coming up (so no 10% discount on the dress)

I'm not sure what makes the most sense. Any thoughts?

I would buy the dress in CT because you could just schedule your fittings for when you are already visiting, your friend works there, and you get 10% off at the trunk show.

If you think you will need a lot of alterations, then do it in your home state.  You can always ask your local shop if they will meet the trunk show price.  Trunk shows also often include customizaton such as hollow-to-hem measurements that can save additional $$$$.  If you are making enough trips to hometown, then do it there.

I had to have three fittings for my dress, so I voted for buying locally. I guess it also depends on whether 10% off your dress is a lot of money. If you have a $2k dress 10% makes it worth the inconvenience.

The biggest question is how often you will be in CT before the day.  We got ours in VA, because we were arriving at our wedding venue in MA only the day before the ceremony.  But if you will be in CT several times before the wedding anyway, it would be less of an issue.

Yeah, I'm still trying to figure that one out. I know I'll likely be up there at least 2-3x before the wedding, possibly a few more times. Luckily, it is a quick and usually cheap flight from BWI to CT :-)

I had this same problem and I'm having my dress altered where the wedding is. I only felt comfortable making this choice because I'm basically already sample size (so alterations will be minimal) and I'm def going to be there 2-3 times before the wedding. I voted CT.

Within the last 2 months before the wedding where will you be? and how many timeswill you be going to CT?

If the answer is VA and you won't be traveling much buy it in VA. If you will be traveling at least 3 times before the wedding within those 2 months prior to the wedding I would by it in CT.

I would chose CT. May I asked what state?  I from MA and have been to CT, MA and NY and still can't find a dress.

i agree with the others:  see if your local VA shop will match the CT shop price.  If not, buy in CT and just take the dress and get it altered in VA.  No one ever said you had to get the dress altered by the shop you bought it at!

Thanks everyone for the input! I appreciate it!

@jenny8283, did you mean which store in CT? If that was your question, the answer is The White Dress by the Shore in Clinton, CT. They have a lovely shop and great service! They seem to do a lot of trunk shows too, which is great for the discount.
