I think purple dresses with sunflowers could be really cool. The colors remind me of a big party, like Mardi Gras! But I worry that a purple dress with a yellow sash might be color overload. I'm thinking bold colors though. Are you looking at a light yellow or a bold yellow? The dresses don't have to have both colors in them. I think big yellow sunflower bouquets are super cool.
Here's a post on style me pretty about using a similar color palatte:

You could throw in a few purple flowers into the bouquet:

I know exactly what you are going through - I ended up going with Dessy bridesmaid dresses, but we looked at David's at Lapis, Wisteria, Canary and Gold colors - looking for the same effect. Purple dresses with a champagne or gold sash.
Having seen this dress ON someone (and I'm about to wear that simialr cut in floor length in someone's wedding), I would recommend pulling together the yellow in your bouquets with a ribbon on the stems instead - and not doing a sash. The bouquet shown above is awesome! I know sashes are really trendy but they can also have the effect of "breaking up" the body on your girls in an unflattering way.
So, just my opinion, but if you aren't stuck on using a sash I'd say not doing them.
As for determining the MOH from the other girls, this is another fairly trendy thing. My MOH's (yes, I have two! lol) are carrying full bouquets and the BM's are carrying three simple callas.
Love the dress and color choice, couldn't have picked it better myself :)

I really want to get the dresses choice out of the way, but first the color combo has to be resolved. What do you think of this?
From David's in Lapis

What do you think with a yellow - or goldish yellow sash. Then the maid of honor in the canary yellow with a purple sash (reversed). Holding sunflowers? Maybe some purple in the bouquets too or just sunflowers? Anyone else doing purple/yellow combo?
