I'm buying my dress on etsy! I am putting a deposit down at the end of the month, I can't wait. I'm not worried, the seller has a lot of experience with wedding gowns and she does beautiful work. Well, I am a teensy bit worried since I won't be getting fitted with her, but I know it will work out.
Give it a try! There are so many talented artists and designers on etsy. Just make sure to save a TON of reference photos of the dress you want to show to the designer. I think that helped me a lot.
I am about 2seconds from putting an alchemy bid up on Etsy; at the very least you can compare what the bids will be & cross reference with feedback & even talk to other dress buyers from those who answer your bid [through feedback] to see pictures, and even talk about what they liked & didn't like about the seller & the end result.
You don't have to hedge your bets with Etsy, it's just like getting a quote from any other bridal shop, accept that it's over the internet. Keep me updateed on how it goes if you decide to use this route.
