I wrote this not to get pity or advice, but to put all the snarky holiday-related posts into perspective 😉
I live in Toronto, and hundreds of thousands of customers (keep in mind a customer can mean a whole building), have been without power (no electiricity, heat, running water) since Saturday night, due to the record-breaking ice storm that’s left over 30-50mm of ice covering everything. There are downed trees everywhere, some roads are impassable. The city has issued an extreme cold-weather alert, as temperatures have been going down to the minus-double-digits (celcius). And the latest news is that if you’re still without power, you’re going to be without it until the weekend. Yup, the weekend.
(I’m writing this in the entryway of a grocery store, where there are maybe a dozen people loitering, getting warm, charging their electronics).
The roads are treacherous, so we can’t get to visit DH’s parents as we had planned. All plans, all week, suspended, just trying to have enough to eat and stay warm enough. Luckily some restaurants near us are open, the few times we’ve been willing to take the 12 flights of stairs 🙂
We’re pretty frozen and dirty, but we’re happy to be together. This is really the time when you can see the reality of even two people being a family.
