    I am never touching a Q-tip again!

Why don't I ever learn that all they do is make my earwax worse by impacting it deep inside my ear canal?  Years ago I had to go to a prompt care center and have a nurse irrigate my ear, and you should've seen the big glob of wax she managed to get out.  I've always had a problem with excessive earwax, and so I've gotten accustomed to decreased hearing in my ears every now and then.

Last week I did it again and pushed too deep, and my left ear went totally deaf on me.  Everything was so muffled, and I could barely hear my own voice.  I knew if I just waited several weeks it could clear back up on its own, but I'm starting a new job on Monday, and I need to hear, lol.  So after two days of using those ear drops with the peroxide in them, and flushing both ears with warm water for over an hour, I can now hear again.  Smile

You should've seen the nastiness that squirted out of my ears, and the weird thing was that more gunk came out of my right ear, the one I could still hear out of, lol.  Sorry, just had to share my excitement.  Anyone else have this problem????

Hahahah.  I haven't had this problem, but it runs in the family.  I can't imagine.  I know how pissed off I was when my left ear was clogged from being sick.  I couldn't get it to pop and it was the most irritating thing in the world.  I honestly thought I'd be deaf forever!  Glad to hear you are able to hear again.  :D

@Miss. Meeps: I think we've discussed this before, but I have a thing with popping blackheads the most.  Pimples too, but mostly blackheads.  Omg it's such a sick obsession.  I actually dislike myself for it hahaha.  My poor brother had some blackheads that I noticed when we were taking pictures for his graduation.  I attacked his face.  J had to pull me off of him.

    Sigh.. hahah

    Anyways, enough thread jacking hah

I'm an audiologist in an Ear Nose & Throat office. We have LOTS of patients (including 20-30 year old women) who come in regularly (about every 3 months) to get their ears cleaned. It's VERY common but they're always embarrassed. SO normal for us, though!

This happens to me.  It sucks and I ruptured my ear drum once when I was trying to get the wax out.  I've never learned how to irrigate b/c I hate the sensation of liquid in my ears.

@JeniRae:  I was soooo close to driving to the ER tonight if my home procedure didn't work, lol.  It's reassuring to know it's a lot more common than I thought.

My guy has this problem.  I was actually stranded outside his house for 20 minutes last week calling his house, calling his cell, ringing the bell, knocking, yelling, his dog was barking, and I was smacking the side of his house by his bedroom with a rake...because his ears were so clogged and he couldn't hear (and his dad didn't wake him up like he was supposed to).  He got his ears cleaned this week, thank goodness lol.

@AudzinLuv:  You should get set up on a regular schedule with an ENT! That way, it doesn't have a chance to build up. Also (I think) most ENT offices have better equipment than irrigation (which can be bad for you if you ever have a perforation in your eardrum - you don't want the nasty brown grodys to get behind your ear drum!). We use tiny little vacuum suction things. :) Anyway, I guess this proves you can go to the Bee for ANYTHING! ;)

FH has a similar problem- he is not supposed to use q-tips at all. Instead, flush with peroxide and then use the swimmer's ear drops. He's supposed to anyway, does he? Nope...

@KendallR10: he will get used to it eventually lol....if that fails show him the cyst video so he realizes it could be A LOT worse.

Does anyone know if those candles actually work to clean your ears.

I have an unhealthy addiction to q-tips (We call them 'cotton buds' over here). I've been banned from using them by my FI as they really aren't good for me!

Also, I do have an issue with spots/blackheads etc and drive him loopy about those too! I think I may some mild OCD with it! I saw that YouTube video ages ago - repulsive yet compelling!...

Ear candling is completely ineffective, and can be catastrophic if any of the burning paper falls down the tube into your ear!

@bakerella:  I wouldn't suggest ear candling either.  I've had it done and the last time I did it a piece of the candle fell into my ear, luckily it was just the outside but it burned the skin.  Plus it's not effective as @moara said.  The stuff you see inside the candle is actually just the coating on the candle being burnt up.

@beekiss: See that is what I was wondering! I have seen video and I couldnt believe that was all from a persons ear. Im glad you said this because I have thought about getting it done a few times.

I have a huge problem with impacted ear wax, I basically have the equivilent of a deviated septum in my right ear (can't remember what its called). I've had tubes in it pretty much all my life, and used to have to go to the ENT every other month to get the wax sucked out with the vacuum, which I hate and almost punched my ENT for him doing because my ear is so sensitive.

I use the Debrox ear wax removal stuff, and it works. You can buy it over the counter in a yellow and green box. Make sure you get the one with the bulb in it too, if you don't have one.  Its like an aspirator for kids, but smaller.  I use the stuff at night, and then in the morning, flush my ear. Its a pain in the arse, but if it'll keep me out of the doctors office and prevent me from having another surgery, I'll do it!

Oh, and wanted to say something about the fact that your left ear was more clogged but you couldn't hear out of the right ear. My ENT told me a while ago that at some point, everything comes together, and that's probably why that happened.  It was a while ago when we had that discussion, but I had the exact same problem, and he explained it to me back then

@MrsSl82be:  Thanks for all that info, seems we have similar conditions.  I bought the generic brand, and it worked well enough.  At first I thought the aspirator was going to be too small, but I just kept doing it for over an hour, and it finally loosened the earwax.

A friend of mine said her aunt swears by those candle things.  I had never heard of them, but when I researched them online I read how they weren't effective at all.  Plus it was too scary and weird for me to ever try, lol.  I could just imagine my hair erupting in flames....

But sleeping last night was so hard because I could hear every little noise, lol.  Before I could barely hear the alarm going off.  Take care everyone!

@AudzinLuv: Haha, yeah the hearing changes definitely take some getting used to! I have some permanent loss in that ear, but it changes depending on how much wax is in there.  And its kinda weird, because I had the problem in both ears when I was younger with tubes in both ears, and now my left ear is totally fine, and I only have problems in the right ear. Same with my right thyroid, and right foot. Ugh, the right side of my body is falling apart!

I did this about a month ago and finally was able to hear after 3 weeks of not being able to hear out of my right ear!  Def learned my lesson on q tips...like they say, don't stick anything smaller than your elbow in your ear.
