After reading someone’s post about anxity about going dress shopping, I thought i’d quickly share my as I put it in the title “Quest for the ‘yes!’ dress.”
In mid June I went “home” to visit my family and try on dresses with my mom for the first time. We spent some time the night before playing dress up in her wedding gown then on Alfred Angeo’s website picking favorites to try on. I had assumed tht they would have been perpared for my appointment and had already looked at my top picked and might even have some pulled and ready for me since I had confirmed and scheduled the appointment at least a month in advance. No such luck, I pulled up their site and my Pinterest board and showed my sweet consultant what I had in mind.
Here’s what I tried on at Alfred Angelo and one that would become “the one to beat” according to the tears from my entorage.
and the one to beat… to say I was beaming in this one was an understatment!
This was the forth dress I tried on and the consultant thought I loved the spakle in it when in reality I only really loved the top and the lace. Though being perfectly honest the sprakle was really pretty! She started putting me in lots of Cinderella and spakrle dresses which were so not me.
As a plus size bride Alfred Angelo was a dream. Most of the sample sizes I tried on were an 18 I believe and I had to be clipped into most of them so It took away a lot of my anxieties about dress shopping!
A few weeks later my parents were coming to FL to visit and see our venue. I decided to plan a “bride day” and go shopping with my mom and FMIL. Due to some sad circumsatances my FMIL was unable to make it. I had the Fantastic surprise though of one of my MOH flying across the country overnight to be with me to help me find my dress as I helped her!
I made two appointments. One place purely because according to their site they had a great selection of Allure dresses, which accroding ot my Pinterest board I had fallen hard for. The other appointment was at a salon I had already stopped by to lok at bridesmaid dress swatched and they seemed to have a large selection as well as helpful staff.
The first experince was my nightmare. The dress selection was terrible; really only one long wall of dresses and a 50% off wall with dresses that looked straght out of the 90s sold as it! All the dresses were a size 10 or 12 and I stood in a dressing room surrounded by mirrors in nothing but my nude colored undergarments. I felt more and more deflated with every beautiful dress especially with the fact the consultant was litterally groping me to try and get the dresses past my hips. I quickly changed and with tears in my eyes my MOH asked if anywhere else locally carried Allure dresses knowing how much I wanted to try on some Allure dresses!
With a quick google search she rocked it and found out that there was an Allure trunk show happing at a birdal shop not too far from our second appointment! They had a 3:00 p.m. appointment which was perfect and said they had Allure dresses in all sizes. She booked it, I was excited again!
As soon as we walked in to the second appointment I already felt a bit better but it was my consultant that was a true angel. She was a bit of a bigger girl herslef and totally empathized with the experince I had just had. She gave us a quick run down of what dresses were where, actually looked at the printed pages I brought with me and told us to pull whatever we wanted.
My mom, MOH and I along with the consultant pull a ton of dresses! (I’ll have to update with actual photos of me but here’s the one that beat out the Alfred Angelo dress and got me back on track for what I really wanted! Mori Lee #3151.)
I loved the lace just wasn’t crazy about the neckline.
The last impromtu appointment didn’t allow photos until you say yes to a dress! The experince was interesting. There was an Allure representative there, that I hadn’t realized wasn’t from teh salon until I was actually in my 2nd dress. You were only allowed 3 dreses at a time, though I don’t know how strict they were with that as once I had pulled some dresses they kept bringing more for me to try!
All the trunk show dresses were a size 8, I was once again heart broken the dresses were absolutely stunning. Some of the price tags kept me from actually looking at the dresses. We had my three and off I went. Nothing was really doing it for me . Then the Allure consultant asked if I wanted to see one of the dresses from my pictures. I thought we hadn’t pulled it because it was a size 8. I didn’t think there was any shot in hell I’d be able to get it on to even remotely see what it could look like.
Over my head the dress went, squeezing my chubby arms into the beautiful lace arm holes. It was it. I asked for a sparkley belt. The consultant laughed, she had no idea I was already pretty convinced. Then I asked for a veil. Then a headband, as I loved and still love the one I had tried on at Alfred Angelo. I took both the veil and headband off. My MOH had come to stand next to me as the Allure consultant pulled to dress in the back to be closer to the shape it would actually be on me. I looked at my MOH and she had tears in her eyes, it confirmed what I had already decided. I quietly looked at her an just said “this is it!” My mom wasn’t even paying attention she was chatting with the consultant. Once I turned to them and just smiled and a little louder siad Yes there were hugs and of course photos, at least the best that I could get with the back being held together and pinned to my bra lol.
No pictures of me in it for the time being but here is exactly what I knew I wanted my beautiful Allure dress!! I plan on wearing two different sparkely sashes; one in ivory ofr the ceremony and one in red for the reception! I am beyond exctied.
So have faith ladies there is a dress out there for you! It might even be 6 sizes too small and still make you fall in love with it!
P.S the dress I’m wearing holding my dress is about the color I hope to find for the bridesmaid dresses 😀
