So my cousin is getting married in November and he was trying to give me ideas on how to save for my wedding. I have had to change my wedding to a Sunday and to 2pm. He suggested for the reception to just buy the cake and get mixed nuts and a few other little snack foods. I just dont know if that seems too cheap or tacky. I am seriously doing the rest of my wedding on 1000 counting food, alterations, invitations, decorations, and i even have to buy the table clothes and whatever plates i may need.
Suggestions would be great.

I don’t think it’s cheap or tacky! I’m having a dessert and cocktails reception myself. I think the time you have – 2pm – is perfect for a light cake reception. Just make sure you note on the invites that there will be a “cake reception” or something to that effect – there is probably better wording for it than that.

It all probably depends on what you want. If you want something more; my best suggestion would be to wait a little while longer & try and save a little more. If having more isn’t important to you then cake & punch would be a nice small get together. Not at all tacky if that’s what you want. Because you can do cake and punch with class also.

I really tyink it depends on your wedding. If you’re having a casusal backyard thing, nuts, snacks, and cakes are fine. Just make sure you serve enough food or people will leave, since most people expect food at a reception unless you specify it’s an appetizer reception. There are lots of ways to swing a wedding for $1,000 I think =]. How many ppl?

I agree with the girls. Do whatever you think is best. Snack and cake aren’t tacky, especially at 2pm. That’s not a sit-down meal kinda time. Just make sure to somehow express that in the invitation. And as long as there’s enough for all the guest, they’ll all have fun and so will you!

We are doing cake, punch, cider, chips and salsa, and maybe some fruit and/or cheese platters. Very simple. It’s an afternoon reception, like yours, so we don’t need to feed people a meal. Simple and affordable doesn’t have to equal tacky!

Just make sure you have enough, no matter what you serve!
I love the idea of a casual chips and salsa bar with margaritas for a casual, ‘snacky’ style reception! You could serve some little tartlets too or stuffed mushrooms. I’m picturing just bowls of nuts laying around….so as long as there’s some oomph going on you’ll be good. 2pm is perfect for snack overload! =]
