I wasn’t sure exactly where to post this and figured since my question has to do with getting a piece of jewelry appraised, I should put it in the ring section since I’m sure many of you know more about appraisals because of your rings. Hope no one minds.
Little back story, my grandmother gave me a diamond bracelet years ago. I am wearing it on the day of my wedding as that was always her wish (sadly, she’s since deceased) and I’ve always said that no matter what, I will wear that bracelet the day of my wedding. The problem is the bracelet is a bit big on me and I will be getting it sized and from the links of the bracelet that will be taken off, I plan to make earrings. My question is should I get this bracelet appraised before giving it over to a jeweler for a couple weeks? It is very old, vintage, platinum, and I absolutely love it. I just don’t know if it’s smart to give such a family heirloom to a jeweler before getting it appraised? I dunno… I trust this private jeweler place but I’m wondering if the smart thing to do would be to get it appraised somewhere else before it gets dipped and shined, a diamond will be added in an area where there is one missing, and then the links be taken out to make earrings.
What do you guys think? And if I should get it appraised, do I just go to any jeweler? I’ve never appraised anything before.

I don’t nkow if you need it appraised for sizing, but since you want to wear it, I would have it appraised and then insured so that you can wear it with less stress… just in case.

If it’s seriously solid platinum then yes I would definitely have it appraised. It looks like it would be quite valuable!

@Westwood: if she is going to get it appraised in this case, it would prob make more sense to do it after she gets it sized, though, since they’ll be taking some of the links off

Please get it appraised.
I know it’s a pain to do, and maybe doesn’t feel necessary, but I’m dealng with the fallout from the situation that occurs when you decide to get it appraised once the jeweler has worked on it.
Get it appraised and insured, then have it sized.
Also, that’s a gorgeous bracelet!

You are one lucky girl to have their INCREDIBLE Family Heirloom
I 100% agree with @franklyn: get it appraised first. Then put some insurance on it to the appropriate level… and then have it worked on.
This process will protect you if something should happen to it while it is at the Jeweller’s
You can have EVERYTHING then appraised somewhere down the road after the work (Bracelet & Earrings) and make any necessary adjustments to the Insurance Policy.
Hope this helps,
PS… YOu are going to look BEAUTIFUL on your Wedding Day !!
