I say let it be a surprise. Everyone likes getting presents they weren't expecting. 
I say to let it be a surprise too...but, if you're looking to get their opinion on the jewelry, then you can let them know what it's going to be. If you're just going with what you think is cute...surprise them! Everyone loves surprises!
For anything else, let it be a surprise. Jewelry though is strictly personal taste and you need to know what they like and what they don't, otherwise it will get tossed out or collect dust, being a waste of money on your part.
Most bridesmaids expect that you'll get them some jewelry so they won't go out and buy something themselves. I say surprise them! I'm sure they will love it!
The last wedding I was in, a lot of the bridesmaids asked the bride if she wanted our jewelry to coordinate, so that's when she told them not to worry about it, she had that taken care of. So if they ask, you could hint at it, but otherwise I'd let surprise them. :)
I say let it be a surprise, but you can let them know that you're taking care of jewelry for the wedding so they don't need to go buy anything.
I generally expect to get jewelry when I am a bridesmaid, although when I don't hear anything from the bride I get a little nervous about whether I need to buy myself jewelry or not. With my girls, I just informed them that they will not receive jewelry, so to get their own stuff. So, I like the idea of getting a little hint . . .
I'd love to see pictures when you get the jewelry! Please do a follow-up post!

hi bees,
i wanted to ask a question. i'm not planning on surprising my bridesmaids with anything fancy. i was in a wedding in october and my friend gave us all handmade jewelry (one of her friends is an expert jewelry maker). i REALLY liked this idea. when i started my new job in october, one of the first friends i made also does a TON of jewelry making. She makes beautiful things!!! (See attached photo).
for my wedding, i have commissioned my friend's good art to make some gold themed jewelry (with rhinestones - i'm going for a very regal look!) to go with the aubergine-eggplant bridesmaids dresses.
the question i have for you is, do i email my bridesmaids in advance and let them know that i'm doing this? or do i let it be a surprise?
