definitely don't have to be a monogram- these are mine (a tribute to our alma mater- fsu)
Nooo they can be anything you want!

If you like that cake topper, you should get it! :)
Cake toppers can be anything you want them to be. I am also a wedding vendor and sell cake tops on my website. The majority of my brides pick cake toppers that peronify who the couple is; not necessarily a monogram.
I don't think they have to be anything specific. Whatever you like as a cake topper you should use to top your cake! I've seen a bunch of stuff, from flowers to photos to what looked like a fake diamond paper weight. I think your idea is really nice, really unique too.
@ashleyjane: Your cake toppper is ADORABLE!!!!
I didn't know if there was some sort of "rule" about using monograms and stuff, but I'm glad to see that it's okay to choose whatever me and fiance decide that we like best.
It can be any cake topper you like that matches your personality. I brought my friend a Cinderella - Percious Moment figure and she used as a cake topper. Here's an image of it:
actually having a monogram is a new occurence!! most folks err on the side of having the bride and groom.
This was mine. I love it because it's a keepsake too!

Do cake toppers always have to be a monogram?
I was at Macy's the other day and I noticed that my favorite glass company in the world has a bridal glass figurine and I'd love to use this on top of my cake:
