Cake toppers can be anything you want them to be. I am also a wedding vendor and sell cake tops on my website. The majority of my brides pick cake toppers that peronify who the couple is; not necessarily a monogram.

I don’t think they have to be anything specific.  Whatever you like as a cake topper you should use to top your cake!  I’ve seen a bunch of stuff, from flowers to photos to what looked like a fake diamond paper weight.  I think your idea is really nice, really unique too.

It can be any cake topper you like that matches your personality.  I brought my friend a Cinderella – Percious Moment figure and she used as a cake topper.  Here’s an image of it:

actually having a monogram is a new occurence!! most folks err on the side of having the bride and groom.
