Might be annoying to people who wear shorter dresses. Poke them in the ass. But the ceremony would look cool.

As someone who was raised on a farm…

Hay bales are awesome. However they can poke you in the ass regardless of what you’re wearing, they offer no back support (Slouching, anyone?) and they aren’t exactly comfortable. Hay has a habit of getting everywhere (even on you and in places you don’t want it to be!)

I’m assuming your coordinator meant straw bales (Big yellow cubes usually lashed together with cord or wire) instead of actual hay… but if you get actual hay (usually green) keep in mind that hay can spark allergies. Straw, not so much.

That would be cool with fabric to cover it.

As long as fabric is covering it so people aren’t poked with straw I think it is fine.  I don’t like seating without backs because I am a big sloucher, but as long as your ceremony isn’t super long no big deal.

I wouldn’t love sitting on a bale of hay.  I’d do it, but I would prefer a chair.

If you have older relatives like grandparents coming, you may want consider inlcuding a few chairs for them, as they might have trouble sitting on a backless bale. Otherwise, it sounds great.
