I am only having 1 big envelope (no outer envelopes) but if I did do the outer I probably would not line it.  I feel like the outer envelope is more for protection of the actual envelope containing the invite so it wouldn’t need to be lined.  Also, it took me forever to trace, cut, and glue all the liners in my envelopes so I wouldnt really want to do that all over again 🙂

I think liners are purely for looks.  They really made my invites pop!

We didn’t do inners, so we just lined the outers.  I think that also helped hold the invitations in place during mailing, and gave the whole suite a bit more "heft" so they were more indestrucable in the mail!

In theory, I’d like to line all my envelopes, but it IS a bit time consuming (having done so for my save-the-deates) – so it really depends on how much time/patience you have!  I lined them purely for decorative reasons, and I think that is usually the reason – but I think sometimes envelopes are lined so that people can’t see what’s inside the envelope.

You only "need" to line the inner envelope–the liner is decorative and the outer envelope’s entire purpose is to protect the inner envelope from taking a beating in the mail.

The purpose of the liner is decorative, but it can have other purposes, like Miss B’s. 🙂

We only lined our outer, since the inner was translucent-

Again, purely for decorative purposes.

We didn’t have an inner and an outer as I don’t think I would’ve been able to close the suite if I had had both! (Those invites were already SUPER thick from the pocketfold and inserts). The only purpose of an envelope liner is to add some extra pizzazz to the suite. I used them to pull my whole look together.

Since sending my wedding invites I am addicted to lining everything. I lined my bridal shower thank you’s which made a huge difference; and also lined the RD invites. I don’t think I am ever going to NOT line my stationery ever again 🙂

I’ve heard people saying that they also used the liner when the envelope paper is too thin, so that way they can’t see though it, especially if the invitation has contrast with the paper, but in the end yup its main decorative purposes 🙂

I’m lining the outer envelope because we’re not doing the inner envelope.  I agree with everyone else…it’s decorative.  I am using the same paper to line my envelopes and as part of the belly band going around the invite enclosure.
