My 'friend' went dress shopping today and called me all giddy and told me this exact phrase, "I paid less on my gown than the fatter girls in the store paid for theirs!"
absolutely appauled i asked how. She replied, "Fatter girls gowns are more expensive cause they need more fabric."
OMG is this true?!! Can they actually do that??!!
[edit] she's abnormally skinny like 120lb and 5"2 so she considers average size women plus sized :/
Uh, yes, some lines do charge a little extra for larger size dresses. I'm a street size 12, and they measured me as an 18 in a bridal store, and I would have had to pay extra. I ordered the 14, and it was just fine...
@SapphireSun: I hope youre kidding.
Isn't that illegal or something, aside from insanely rude?!!
I dunno... I guess if it legitimately costs the maker more to create the product, they can charge more for it. If you shop even at Wal-Mart you'll notice that the same shirt in the regular and plus size section is more expensive.
I believe the BM dress that I ran into the plus size premium at size 18 was Alfred Angelo.
I think ti is common that there is an upcharge for larger sizes because of the additional material required. I recently ordered T-Shirts from a wholesaler for a group and XXL T-Shirts were $2 more than S-XL.
Yes, I ordered a dress (chinese style) online and it was the same thing, plus size means more fabric so there is an extra charge.
It is a common thing. As mentioned places like WalMart and Target will often have a higher price (not by *much* but still) for sizes 2xl and bigger. It does make sense as it uses more fabric, but how rude of that "friend" to say it like that!
Yes, typically if they have to use more material, the dress will cost more. Most I've seen have been around $40-$60 more. I paid $40 extra for my dress.
Btw, your friend sounds like a real delight.
yes this us true but not just in bridal gowns but in regular clothes as well... plus size items are bigger and require more material to make therefore the cost is slightly higher
I don't see why anyone is suprised by this. It takes more fabric to make a bigger gown. I had to order a plus sized gown because they go by your biggest measurement (my boobs), otherwise I would have been in a regular sized. I was not suprised I had to pay more, they needed extra fabric to cover the girls!! I will also have to pay to get the waist and hips taken in, but the dress will fit well. Your friend sounds like a piece of work though...lol.
Yea this is true. My gown was more in a size 16 or higher. I ordered an 18 so I paid $100 more than if I'd ordered a 14.
I fit in a size 14 of my dress, however my boobs didn't. I had to get the dress in a size 18 to accomodate the ladies. It cost me $325 more. Then I also needed extra length, I'm 5'10" and wore a 4 inch shoe, and that cost me an extra $225. So because I'm a total Glamazon :) It cost me $550 more!!! Totally stunk.
I am plus sized, I only paid 975 for my dress, price was based on style not size.
Yup... simple math. More fabric = more $$, just like adding length or straps.
It's not only wedding dresses, but clothing in general gets more pricey for plus sized gals. I know in Target the some shirts are about $2-$3 more for plus sizes.
Yes, as PP said, it is common, and it makes sense! Bigger size = more fabric = more $$! Your friend was rude about it though, but I don't think it should be considered rude/illegal/unfair at all.
Yup! Some lines do charge more for us plus size girls. Pronovias usually does but waved the upcharge for me. I was glad they did because I was gonna act up about it! lol
Edit: I was gonna act up not because of the charge but because of what I went through to find the dress (read my dress shopping nightmare) I completely get more fabric = more money.
A lot of bridal designers do charge extra for plus sized gowns. The larger gowns need More beading, More fabric, More work and thus More expensive. But a few places dont charge extra, I think Alfred Angelo doesnt charge extra. just ilke pp stated tall women have to pay more for extra length too. I'm 5ft 11 and if I had decided to wear heals I would have had to pay more for extra length but thankfully I opted for flats and my Mori less gown is just the perfect length for me.
Its common to charge a little bit more for a bigger dress or whats considered plus sized. But its not a ton more.. Im a 16 and I didnt have to pay any extra. It also depends on what stores you go to on what size they start some stores start charging more for one size when others do for a different size.
Makes sense. High quality fabric is expensive--if your dress needs less, why should you pay as much as people who need more?
Larger ring sizes cost more than smaller ones, too, because they require more precious metals. Same idea.
Oh, and I'm a little irritated with your description of your friend as "abnormally skinny." That's every bit as obnoxious as calling a plus-sized girl fat.
@Oribel013690: Oh, and I'm a little irritated with your description of your friend as "abnormally skinny." That's every bit as obnoxious as calling a plus-sized girl fat.
I agree 100% here. Plus, at 5'2" and 120 lbs your friend is smack dab in the middle of "normal/healthy" BMI range.
I don't understand why people get so worked up about this. It makes complete sense when you think about the materials and labor cost that go into making larger items.
Also, to add, I wear a size 12/14 so in bridal sizes a 16+. My dress however was made to measure so my size didn't affect the price. If I had gone with a "sized" gown, I probably would have had to pay more and I would have been fine with it.
Yes, you need to pay extra due the fabric. It seems reasonable. I'm a maggie bride and am 5'10. I was on the cusp. If I wore 4inch heels, then I would have had to order a tall length. The talls had an additional surcharge - I think it was around $350ish, but dont really recall. I decided to go with lower shoes :)
Yup! anything size 18 and up is more money but why would she feel the need to say that to you?
@Mrs.MedinaJr: Agreed.
OP - your 'friend' kind of sounds like a shallow biatch.
@KatNYC2011: she is.
She made it sound like plus size girls get punished for being bigger because they have to pay more money.
She spouts all the time that skinner girls get more breaks in life because they are healthier therefor she never feels bad about someone thats plus sized and can't find a right fit.
I was just shocked is all. I guess I never thought too mch of it till she said something.
I'm not a plus sized girls but i'm not as skinny as she is either. It's been a very common, er, 'debat' about skinny vs. as she so lovely calls it 'lazy fatness'.
I really just wanted her to be lying or something.
5'2 120 is hardly abnormally skinny
I'm a street size 16 and 6'. when i am in weddings they always charge me $50 more for bm dresses; extra fabric and extra length. Sucks when the dress costs $250+! I get it, but I hate it b/c when I get the dress and it needs to be taken in more than a size and it is longer than everyone else's it is annoying!
btw, i never had to pay more for my bridal gown
@KatNYC2011: my dress was made to measure too, but when I crossed over what would be the "size" of the dress I had to pay more.
again, I just wished she was lying about that cause she's so cruel about it.
She could've said it with some tact, but some people are naturally bitchy.
But 5'2", 120lb is not abnormal.
@techie: It makes me sick how a very tackless, bitchy person was right about that :/
@KatNYC2011: I'm glad someone else said this. While the friend's behavior is appauling, I was equally appauled at the "abnormally skinny" label slapped on someone who is at a perfectly healthy weight.
So I texted her saying that I was suprised but she was right and she said, "of course I am. Fat girls should be penalized for not working hard to have a perfect ideal body. You know how I can't stand how fat girls always have poeple feeling sad for them. Anyway whena re you coming over to see it?"
wtf :(
Needless to say, i'm not going.
I have never been a small person, being 6' people are always surprised when I tell them what size I wear. I may be "Fat" but I run over 20 miles a week and I do work hard. I guess I work hard at being fat.
@Lilubird: LOL stupid people should be banned from breading but that doesn't happen...clearly....
@Lilubird: Why are you even going out of your way to still speak to this person? She doesn't sound like she's worth anyone's time.
