Question for cloth diapering mamas (or others with opinions on washers/dryers)

We have the Whirlpool Duet washer/dryer combo. I have no problem getting cloth diapers clean with it. I do a prerinse, heavy duty wash and then a final rinse.

I used my mom’s top loading machine while I was staying at her house a few weeks ago and the diapers didn’t come as clean as they do in my front loading machine at home! 🙂

Yeah we just have the standard one…no steam option. I think we paid just under $1000 for the pair.

Can’t speak directly to the front-loading washing machine question (ours is a top-loader), but I do highly recommend getting a diaper-sprayer toilet attachment if you’re going to cloth diaper! The flushable liners are helpful too. Between those two, you can make sure that most of the mess stays out of the washing machine entirely.

One question for to think about, though: would the steam be damaging to the PUL (the waterproof lining of the fabric) on your diapers/diaper covers? Depending on what type of cloth diapers you are planning to use, you might not want to steam them. It could be good for prefolds, or for the inserts that go in pocket diapers, but it might damage covers, pockets, all-in-ones, etc.

I think most people wash them in hot, although many of the manufacturers’ instructions say to only use warm/below a certain degree temperature (and if you don’t follow their washing instructions, it voids the warranty). We definitely wash in hot – but our machine doesn’t get *super* hot, and most of our stash is secondhand anyway so voiding a manufacturer’s warranty isn’t an issue for us. We do keep them out of the dryer, though, to extend the life of the PUL. If we had a steam setting on our washer, I would only use it on the inserts.
