Sign up for a new email address (which you can then forward to your old one, or vice versa). I actually got my email addy years before the official engagement just to make sure it was available. ;)
You can't change your email address on gmail. You will have to sign up for a new one in order to get one in your married name. Mine was almost impossible since my married name is more common than my maiden name. To change your name on the send mail as you go to settings then accounts and input. Next to the send mail as just click edit.
In anticipation of a possible name change, I just registered for the email address of my future new name :) Luckily it was still available! Then I just have it forwarded to my regular one, and with Gmail there's an option to default reply from whichever email it was sent to, so no one should ever know you're accessing it from the old email.
But I will keep watching the thread to see if there's a better way to do it!
@MissNoche: THEY WILL KNOW! I used several accounts that I check in one place, and I discovered that mine were being sent "From: [Stupid Email] on behalf of [Professional Email]" which was pretty much the most embarrassing thing ever. ;) If they're both legit email addresses I think it's not a big deal though... it just means people will know your maiden name.
Wow- are you going cold turkey on removing your maiden name from everything? I think I'm going to keep my old email address :)
I never even thought to get signed up for this! My first and new last names are both pretty unique so hopefully it's still available!
I checked and my new name isn't available without numbers or something after it. I've decided to keep my email address the same but I'm going to change the name that shows up, so my name will be First NewLast but my e-mail address will still be firstmaiden@gmail.com
I just did this, you go to settings, then click on the "Accounts and import" tab and then click on "edit info" under the "send mail as" section.
This is just to change your name, not your e-mail address.
I also am in the camp of those who reserved the new name email... JUST IN CASE! ;)
Is it bad that I have no desire to change my name or the "nickname" portion? Yikes...bad future wife
yep, @daisybride has it right...just go to gmail then settings then accounts and import and then you can edit the info/change your name!
yayy :) can't wait to do this!!!!!!
Sounds like someone already shared how to change the name, but yeah, it's a bummer you have to create a new e-mail with your new name. I did it before our wedding, but not far enough in advance to get FirstnameHislast, so I had to get Hislast.Firstname, which isn't too bad...but dang, I thought our last name was more unique than it is, lol.
@Spaniel: Holy cow you're right! I just ran a test to confirm! How embarassing...makes me think less of Gmail now ;) Luckily I kept my "stupid email" address separate! Thanks for the heads up!
@Miss Sapphire - Nope, thats not bad at all. I've struggled with the name change decision and feel "eh" about it. I just changed it legally 2 weeks ago and this week I changed it in work. I started using my new initials in the lab today (SO WEIRD!). I don't hate having his name but I wasn't dying to change mine either. For some reason after legally changing it at SSA, I just came to terms with it and it has been easier to change it everywhere else.
I don't know how I feel about changing my name yet....but I will probably get the new Gmail just in case I decide to change it totally. I know FI wants me to, but it makes me a little sad to think about giving up my maiden name...
I wanted MyFirstHisLast, but it wasn't available. But, my fiance has his own domain name, so now my new email is MyFirst@HisFirst .net :)
@Nexus: That is really cool! I've never heard of anyone doing that before!
P.S. Does Gmail have rules against multiple/unused accounts (if I secure my married name but dont really use it for a year and a half?)
This thread made me go get my new email! Haha. I did MyFirstInitialHisLastName @gmail.com. I even set it up to go to my old account and everything, haha. thanks for reminding me ladies!
FYI - I just tried Mrs(First name)(new last name) and it was totally free! Kinda cheesy with the "Mrs" in front, but I like it better than adding numbers or other random stuff.
I thought about this too and ended up setting up a new email with myfirsthislast for wedding planning stuff. After the wedding it will become my primary personal email. I was lucky that it was available!
I just checked and apparently changing my name is going to make my name almost the same as a published author. Apparently she took my gmail name I wanted. Ugh.
hey ladies, I reserved mine about six months ago... or so I thought! You MUST keep logging into them for them to be saved, or else they disappear! I had to contact them and even then, there's no assurance that i'll still get my email address back. so be careful about logging in! Sign up for mail from a couple of stores with that one and send yourself a few emails...
Sad - not available. My current last name is way less common and I love simple first name last name emails. If I put Dr in front it works...just need to get a PhD before August - jk. This might be the one pitfall of getting married : )

How do you change your google email "nickname" or email address?
