Hi all you Minnesota Ladies Smile

I'm attending a wedding in Alexandria MN on Saturday, and the invitation specified it is "formal attire".  The wedding is at 3pm (because it is a church ceremony) followed by an evening reception.

I'm from Los Angeles, and here, if a wedding is 'formal' you wear a cocktail dress instead of a sundress haha.

I'm wondering what the definition of 'formal' is in Minnesota.  I have a navy blue floor length chiffon dress with a satin empire waist, or a regular plain ole black knee length dress.  My inclination is to wear the floor length since I would wear a knee length to every other wedding, but I don't want to be overdressed.  So, if YOU were invited to a wedding in your area and 'formal' dress was requested, what would you wear?

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE HELP!

I voted knee length (I went to college in the Alex region). I think around here (or at least in my experience) formal means "please, please, just dress up a little." Sometimes it takes a lot to get midwesterners out of their everyday clothes. Depends on the social circle though. We said 'formal/cocktail' to get people to dress up nicely. If we had just said cocktail, we'd get a lot of casual clothes. Some circles may know the proper definitions and really mean 'formal.'

As long as your knee length gown is a nice, dressy gown, I think you're good. If you go full length, try to avoid something too flashy or bridesmaid-ish, so it's a little understated (in case you are overdressed). Heck, even prom dresses are half and half short and long now, and that's about as formal as most folks get.
