Ok, so I got pulled over today, I thought I was going around 42-43 in a 35. I really didn't think I was speeding at all but when I looked at my speedometer when I saw the cop that's what it read. Anyway, the dog was with me cuz we were on the way to the vet and she started barking and going crazy when she saw him. He didn't say anything to me but ask for my license and tell me to keep my window rolled up because my dog probably heard another dog in the neighborhood. He came back 5 minutes later with a ticket for me to sign, I sighed and signed it, not even really reading it because the dog again was going nuts and we were now late for our apppointment. The officer never said why I was pulled over or anything else, other than to ask for my license, tell me to roll up my window and then tell me to sign my ticket for speeding. I found this really odd that he never said why, so the point to this long winded story is to know if an officer is required to let you know why they detained you? Thanks in advance.

Hmm, usually I got a 'do you know how fast you were going there miss?' but I don't know if they actually have to tell you.  Maybe they were thrown off by the dog freaking out.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter. The officer still saw you break the law, so he had probably cause to pull you over and had the right to cite you. Sorry!

I agree.. if you didn't ask.. I don't think he's required to say something.

Thanks all, I just wondered cuz I found it kind of odd and when I told DH he thought it was kind of odd. I'm sure the dog threw him off, just like she threw me off.

I'm not sure about the state you live in, but in Colorado, I was able to go to court and plead it down so I only got 1 point instead of the 3+ for the speeding ticket.

@MissAsB- I live in Ohio and I've been Googling some info. I think that I may go to court and request that I pay to go to driving school for the day instead of getting points on my license. Everything I found says that many courts are willing to do that if it is a first time ticket which it is for me.

That sucks! However, having you sign the ticket was, in his mind, probably enough notice to you for why you were getting pulled over/ticketed. I don't know what the tickets in your state look like, but they usually do have to indicate why you are being cited. I agree with above posters, though-- the dog probably just threw him off his normal pulling over routine. Good luck!

FutureMrsTal can you guys not got to traffic school on the first offense? Out here if it's your first offense within the last 3 years I think you go to traffic school and you don't get the points (then it's another 3 years without a ticket and it works the same way). See how much we take things for granted I thought it was like that for everyone . . . oops!
