Ok first off. I LOVE dancing! Started when I was 3 years old and my favorite is swing dancing. I would do it during my entire reception if everyone knew how and the elders wouldnt fall dead by the end of the night. lol. Anywho though I was thinking...During the first dance, how do you dance??? Is it the traditional one arm around the back and the other holding your partners hand? Or do you go old school and do it high school style and mans hands on hips and girls around guys neck??? I am actually really really debateing this in my head so give me some idea girls! What do you think you'll be doing?????

i think you and your SO should dance how you want to (or can!) I think its so cool when couples who can actually dance, (salsa, swing, or ballroom..whatev ) DANCE!!! Its fun and entertaining for everyone!!!

FI and I are not dancing inclined so will will be resorting to the "high school sway" along with the holding our hands with his hand on my waist. ha! Boring to watch for our guests but owell! we are both kinda shy that way so we just want to do our sway and then be done with it... its more just a nice moment for us rather than an entertaining one.

I'm so impressed by people that can dance, that I LOVE seeing it at weddings!  I think you should do whatever is fun and fitting for YOUR first dance!

FI & I went to a wedding when we first started dating, and I drunkenly yelled at him for slow dancing with one arm behind my back and the other holding my hand but pulled into his chest instead of held out.  I told him that was reserved for a romantic first-dance at my wedding.  He remembers that and has promised that's how we'll dance at our wedding=)

If you and your fiance can both cut a rug, I think you should DEFINITELY do a little swing routine for your first dance!  I read about a wedding where the couple offered a quick swing lesson during the reception so everyone could join them for a song.  It sounded SOOOOO cute!

if i can afford lessons were doing a salsa, but if not we dancing to chantal kreviuzic (SP) feels like home! probably with his arm around my lower back and my hand up by his shoulder but knowing us we will be close enough to grind... but kids will be there so were still gonna keep it PG

Like krissybee, my husband and I did the high school sway.  We have no dance experience and no desire to dance so that first dance was the only dance that we did.

We also love swing dance and wanted to do it for our first dance, but thought it might be too fast for a first dance. So instead we did a choreographed Lindy Hop. It was so much fun! You can see our dance in our wedding video here: http://www.wellspunweddings.com/final_smcdowell.htm

Do whatever you feel like dancing, even if it's the swing! We're doing the hybrid of the high school sway with the formal/traditional hand placements for our first dance. I too grew up on ballroom dancing taught by my father and I decided to do a type of ballroom dancing for our father/daughter dance!

I think it would be awesome if you did a swing dance as your first dance - it sounds like people do everhyting from the high school sway to serious choreograph and everything in betweeen - whatever works for you guys will be perfect!

I love Twalila's suggestion of offering a quick swing lesson for everyone!  Also, if both you and your FI can swing, then DO IT!!!  I would love to be able to bust out an awesome swing dance for our first dance.  And honestly, I think that a wedding is a FUN event, and a swing song is perfectly appropriate, fast or not, for a first dance song.  They don't all have to be mushy and slow, unless you really want that.  Smile

My FI can dance, so I think I'm going to have to brush up my limited skills to keep up with him.  My future SIL gifted us some dance lessons (leftover from their wedding prep), so I think we'll take advantage of that and have a fun first dance song.  The song that we love is more of a waltz than a swing, though, so it might end up a little easier.  :)

We LOVE to dance and are actually doing a dance medley of swing, waltz and foxtrot to a few songs a friend of ours is mixing for us.  Anything goes!  If you love to swing and can do it in your dress (we want a little tango too, but can't figure the intricate footowork out with my gown!) then go for it!

    Dance, dance, dance!

I agree, if you can dance, do it!

when my fi and I first starting dating, we wanted to do something a little different than traditional dates. So we took dancing lessons together and learned to waltz. we love it and have a blast doing it, so that's what we'll be doing.

I think you should totally swing dance, that would be fun and exciting and get the guests excited to dance too!

Do whatever is most comfortable! And if you can swing, you should totally do a swing dance!!! That would be soo cool to see!!

We actually have been to several weddings where the couples rocked it Jr. High style with the hands over neck/waist and sway. It was very sweet, but after about 30 seconds of watching the couple it was a little boring to the eyes.

We decided to give a little more of a show and danced with hand on back/shoulder and holding one hand. We actually took one dance lesson and created a little simple routine with spins & dips. Our guests were impressed and I think it made our first dance a little less dull :)

We did a swing dance--to Leonard Cohen's "Dance Me to the End of Love"--for our first dance.

We are thinking about taking a few dance lessons so we can pull off a waltz for our first dance. A little ambitious, so we'll see... :)

I think the highschool sway is beautiful and real.

I say save the choreographed dance for the 2nd dance or something else later.
