One thing that really freaks me out is thinking about photography in these days.

In the past, everyone had to take photos with the old cameras and get them printed (developed or polaroids). So of course, we all have tons and tons of photos of us from when we were children to show our kids and grandkids, yadda, yadda, yadda.

    However, nowadays, everything is digital.

I for one, am laaaaazy. I love taking photos, but NEVER print them out. They're all stored on my computer. And it scares me because what if soemthing happens to my computer and all my own memories are gone?

I just think its a hassle to get things printed when you can just see them on the screen. Sometimes I think I should just get in the habit and commit to printing out a few photos every so often so that I'll have something I can keep and show later on. I want a lot of photos to remember, not just of special occassions!

How do you all deal with your photos and printing/keeping them?

Great question! I'm just like you - they're all stored on my computer! I wish I had the time and energy to get them all printed, but I just don't!

Every few months my mom will hook their digital camera up to the computer and upload all her pictures to Kodak Gallery and pick which ones she wants to print. I really should follow her lead and do the same. I've lost waaaay too many pictures over the years because I would never commit to getting them printed.

My FH keeps a backup 2 external hard drives, one of which he keeps outside of our house, so if something happens to our home we still have it (I think we should get a safety deposit box, but for now it is at his parents)

If you don't want to print them you can always back them up onto an external hard drive. Not only will it prevent you from losing the pictures if something happens to your computer, it will also free up space!

Now if I could only follow my own advice... lol

Ok but how reliable is an external hard drive? Do you really think it will last forever or be compatible with systems in the future.

I feel the only way to guarantee you'll have them is to print them.

I guess I really should just start printing them out!

    Aaaaaaaaaaaand...new project!!!!

I might take a lot of pics, but I just print the ones that I really like. I have an account set up at walgreens.com and you can download the ones that you want them to print, order them then pick them up at the designated time. It's really convenient, and I don't have to buy special printer paper :)

I think it's really important to have some prints of your pics just in case!

that's a good idea okqueenbee. At the same time, I guess it is important to keep some on an external drive or something..God forbid, something happens to your home and your actual photos are destroyed...you do need a backup!

I've never done it but a lot of my BF's family orders photobooks.  It's great because you can design backgrounds and add captions, and best of all (to me anyway) is you can't lose the pictures/they can't fall out like in an album.  They also take up a lot less room than big photo albums.  When I finally stop procrastinating I will be compiling all my halloween photos together to make a book.

If you're printing them, make sure the ink and paper are both archival! (Or else it's pointless. :p)

This is one of the reasons why I still shoot with film for all of my works. You just have to send them to a lab and done.

I would suggest that you backup all your files using a DVD Media (Gold) or upload them into an online photo site. Flickr is nice, free and of course, its offsite.. no worries when you lost a disc or damaged a computer hard drive..

You can also get an unlimited upload/space on Flickr for 24 bucks a year. Keep all of the originals, etc. (And just have them hidden if you want). Love love love flickr.

Sadly I only shoot with b&w (silver-based) film, and only have the equpitment (and patience) to do b&w. Plus I've gotten spoiled by the instant gratification of digital!

Actually, the Discs your images come on are NOT archivable.  Hard drives WILL eventually fail one day.  You do need to make sure you continuously back up all your data and important files, especially your wedding photos!

Ps. Target is going to have a Western Digital 1T external HD for like $50 or $60.  That's a LOT of storage to the average person.  Best buy will have a 1TB firewire Ext. HD for I think $140?  This is all black friday of course.

On NewEgg you can get a 1TB LaCie for 99.95. It's sexy too, and what they sell at the apple store!

Looks like I will have to get an external drive...and of course, start printing some out!

I also want an unlimited Flickr account but I'm too poor to pay 24 bucks a year. Haha...I guess I should. I'll think about it.

    Yeah, I should

Flickr is unlimited, as long as you upload under their quota every month right? Like if I do XX MB every month, it will never technically be full? right?

I store my photos online at picasaweb.  They just lowered their storage prices and I think you can get 20gb now for about $5/year.

$5 a month is not bad crayon...but for some reason, I just like the way flickr looks. lol.

Yeah, that's right. The only problem is you really need to save the HQ images. Those are (if they're JPG) at least 3MB for a photo. You'll run out of the quota pretty quickly.

I'm not a fan of Picasa for some reason. I'm set in my ways. Love for flickr. :p

Here are a couple of things to consider:

    1. Get an album or prints from your photographer, they are expensive but its because of the archival materials used to make them so they will last generations.
    2.  Once you get your disk from your photographer (and all the photos from your guests) back it up in four places: on your computer, onto another disk, onto an external drive and then on an off site server.* Take the original disk (the ones I give my clients is archival) and put in your safety deposit box or a parents house.
    3. That said, it's very likely in 10 or so years the digital format your photos are in may be obsolete.  Think cassette and vhs tapes.
    4. Prints are tangible and will out live technology as long as as they are printed from a dye-sub lab and not your home printer.

    * The two off site server i use is sugarsync I have it synced to my photo folder so every time I upload photos from my camera to that folder, it automatically uploads them to the server.  Flicker is also a great just make sure to check your privacy options so you don't have photos you wouldn't want your mom or boss floating around in cyberspace.

I have a folder for favorites and then number by year and month ( 0910) - October 2009.  I have one copy on my computer, one on disc and then one on an external hard drive.  A little over cautious but I am a photo freak.

I only print out my absolute favorites.  I am somewhat of a serious amateur photographer.
