So bees… I am stressing out a bit about our officiant.
We have a lot of time, but I’m trying to book things early and get things set for our 8/14/15 wedding.
One of the last things I have to do is get an officiant. We live in Colorado, so technically any officiant we get does NOT have to be licensed (Colorado doesn’t require it), so it is a possibility to ask a close friend or family member to officiate for us.
That being said, I don’t know if I would feel comfortable asking any of our friends or family… I just don’t even know who i would want to do that for us. I’ve been looking for a good officiant, we’re hoping for a very short, 15min ceremony – but literally all the officiants we have found are AT LEAST $350.
The one I am in contact with now, his prices start at $379. Does this seem crazy expensive? I budgeted $350 but was really hoping to stay under that and ive us a buffer for a tip for him/her.
What do you all think?
Is $350 a normal rate?
Should I try to get a friend/family member and save the money?
I have no idea what to do!!

Where I live, the county has a list of officiants that will do wedding ceremonies. We, however, are getting a pastor in my neighborhood to be our officiant. We are not members of the church, and we’re paying $300, which is fine.
Perhaps a member of the local clergy might have a lower price. Would you consider just doing a city hall marriage and then whatever celebration later? City hall marriage is about $100 where I live. You could also ask others in your area who they used as an officiant as a springboard for ideas.

andi_isit303: We paid ours $400. She wrote our entire ceremony for us, based on what we wanted and it was great.
Also – I am TOTALLY against asking friends/family to do the ceremony UNLESS it’s someone you are certain will do a great job. We went to a wedding where the father of the groom performed the ceremony and it was SUPER awkward. He even started reading their vows at one point accidentally, and the bride tried not to laugh throughout the whole thing. It was AWFUL.

andi_isit303: We are having our friend do it because the people around us were wanting wayy to much for my taste lol

I don’t live in your area so I am not sure what is an average price for where you live but our officiant cost $750 and is creating our entire ceremony from questionnaires we answered so it will be really personal to us as a couple.

Are you sure about that law? I was under the impression they did not have to be licensed in the state, but friends or family could not do it unless they are licensed (but a couple can solemnize the marriage themselves, sans officiant).
That being said I THINK they can sign up on those free websites to become ordained and they could then perform the ceremony.

We paid $400 so that price seems reasonable!
