I think folded cardstock would be fine for table names/numbers! Just make sure you sue heavy paper, they're not too big and the fold is sharp. Check out these pictures...
You could probably craft something that lets them stand up for very cheap, though! I know Martha Stewart's site has some cute ideas.
www.etsy.com/shop/zcreatedesign these are freestanding numbers you can use! :)

We used inexpensive frames from IKEA. Glued our table names on the bottom with scrabble tiles and framed our STD postcards. =D Super cheap!

My favorite are the wooden numbers from Michael's. Only cost about two dollars, usually free stand, or you use wood glue to glue them onto a simple base. Buy rhinestones and some black paint, paint the numbers and glue the rhinestones on them. I plan on doing that for mine and they turn out SUPER CUTE.

What is the best way to create a free standing table number? I have seen some that are threefold triangles, but I'm not crazy about it. I was wondering if anyone made these themselves, and used something like thick cardstock folded just like a regular card (you know, just one crease) and if they held up well? I'm afraid they'll be too light, or flatten out? I really don't want to buy frames or other types of stands or holders.
