Hi all, (sorry this is kind of long)

So, I got (very close to) my dream Amsale wedding gown at a sample sale a few months ago.  I've been on a high since then b/c it was almost exactly what I wanted from my *dream* designer for a price I could afford (yay for me!)

I was told that I should take it to the dry cleaners so that they could get the dirty off the hem, etc as soon as possible.  The dress is super simple and has no beading or anything - it's just a really nice silk material - and it was in good shape.  Someone recommended a place around me that had done a good job on their dress.  They didn't do dresses in shop, but they sent it to a nation-wide gown cleaning & preservation company.  I thought that was a good thing, so I sent it off.

So, it was supposed to take a month to clean, but it took about 7 weeks and I was getting ansy.  I picked it up yesterday instead of having it delivered b/c I wanted to make sure it looked ok b/c I'd heard horror stories about changes in fabric color, etc.  I thought it looked fine...... until I brought it home. There are a few snags in the silk (which isn't a big deal b/c you can't see them unless you get really close)....and about an inch-long tear/rip in the fabric at the bottom of the dress in the front and some discoloration around it.  I called the store and they said they didn't know anything about it and they're going to try to work with me to get the discoloration out and get their tailor to help with the alterations to make up for it.  But a tear in the fabric - that's pretty unfixable.  If I was like 5 inches shorter (or maybe even if I wore flats), it wouldn't be a big deal b/c it would get taken in with the hem.  But I'm not that short (and I want to wear some cute heels!).

Now, I know it was a sample dress, but I would have never bought a dress with a tear in it.   Esp. since the beauty of the dress is the fabric and simplicity (lack of beading, etc).  It's not 'ruined'.......but it is messed up.  So, assuming they can get the discoloration out, I don't know what to do.  Do I wear my dream dress even though it's flawed (and just hope no one looks at the bottom of the dress)?  Or should I just be thankful that I didn't pay a lot for it and just go get another one?

    What would you do?

From what I understand, if they RUIN your dress (snags count) and it's not wearable, they need to replace it. Check the store policy.

How bad is it, can you post some pics? It may not be bad enough to worry about. yes you want it to be perfect, but nobody may notice especially since it's at the very bottom. Whos' to say you didn't snag it the morning you put it on, right?

If you love it, i'd find a way to make it work.

Honestly, i'd demand that they make it look right or they replace it. Then burst into tears about how they ruined the dress.

I think you'll be the only person to notice it.  I would wear it anyway, then tell your photog to make sure to photoshop the imperfection out of the photos.  Everyone will be looking at the gorgeous BRIDE, not her dress!  Just smile big, no one will look at your feet!

Could you add a few small pick-ups around the bottom to hide them tear? Or a lace panel around the hem to cover the tear?

It's a ltitle hard to say exactly what to do, b/c wedding dresses are so expensive it really depends on your situation.

But I agree with ejs4y8...maybe you can really get them to replace it, or at least help you to do so.  It is your wedding dress, so maybe they'll be more accomodating.  Would you be able to afford a new one if they put the money toward the drycleaning and what they'd spend on alterations to a new dress?  I suppose it would help if you sent pictures, but I think it might not be great to wear a torn dress.  I do think Mighty is right and that no one will notice, but you'll know and it sounds like you might be uncomfortable with it.
