Questions to ask a doula?

We recently hired a doula for the first time, and I found the DONA International website to be a really good resource. The page I linked has a list of questions to ask and suggestions about topics to discuss. I also googled some other pages and cobbled together a list of bits and pieces I got from a few different sources.

Mainly, though, we just met with the prospective doulas at coffee shops and had a conversation with each of them to see how we “clicked.” We talked about their backgrounds and experiences, and about our specific wishes/concerns/goals, and I asked a few questions along the lines of “Have you ever dealt with (situation X)?” and “What would you do if a client of yours (situation Y)?” In the end, it boiled down to getting a feel for each doula’s personality and how well it meshed with ours. DH commented that, even though everyone we talked to was really great and would probably do an excellent job, there was one in particular who seemed really similar to me in a number of ways, and we felt she would be the best person to work with.

No, not yet. We knew we wanted to hire one, though, partly because I’ve read so many good things about how helpful they are (for example, this post on EvidenceBasedBirth.com – the links the author included are also quite helpful!), and partly because of the experience of some friends who worked with one. They had to deal with some pretty serious complications, and their doula was extraordinarily helpful. That solidified our decision to hire one, which we had already been leaning toward doing anyway.
