I found a makeup artist on a site similar to craigslist. I've been corresponding with her via email. She only had two pictures from her portfolio on her listing but they really got my attention. I asked her for more pics but she says she just moved and her stuff is still at her parent's house (who live somewhat far away).  I told her I needed someone available for a trial in July (also the day of our engagement shoot) as well as my wedding in September.

Since she can't show me pics, she offered to do a free trial in the next couple of weeks (before the engagement shoot) and if I like her, I can book her for July and September. I thought this was more than fair so I agreed. I know nothing about this person so could you please help me come up with questions to ask her? I'm having a hard time finding someone I like who is willing to travel to my hairdresser's salon and doesn't charge an arm an a leg. I've never hired a mobile makeup artist before and don't know what to expect!

Pictures will give you an idea of her talent, but you really won't know until the trial.  Since you're getting a free one, that'll be your best bet.  Here's some questions to think about:

    1.  It usually costs more if the artist has to travel all the way to you just to do one person.  Ask her if the BMs, mothers, etc. want their makeup done, what will she charge each person?  Then you can offer services to your gals and decide whether you treat, or each person pays for their own.

    2.  The makeup always looks awesome for pre-ceremony pics, but after some crying, etc., you can definitely use a touch up.  Would she be willing to stick around until just after the ceremony for a touch up and how much is the charge?  If it's too expensive, you'll need to learn how to touch-up on your own.

    3.  Critical question...if she is sick or can't make it for whatever reason on the day, can she provide a qualified back-up?  It's better to have a back-up you don't know than no back-up at all.
