Well it sounds like you don’t want to go, it would really only be for charity sake.

I would say go, at least make her feel like she’s a part of the wedding process, worst case scenario is you don’t find anything and only wasted a few hours. Maybe you can go out for coffee or something to make the best of it.

Eh, it’s probably not worth offending her by not going.

Maybe you could just try on dresses with the same features you have chosen for your dress, to reinforce your decision?

I don’t think it would hurt to just go try some on with her. You said you already want a custom dress, so it could provide you more ideas for that, if nothing else. If you DO find smoething you love, you can always go with your mom later to let her see it and buy it then…and DON’T let your FMIL buy it without your mom’s input!

How about you involve her in some other way. Maybe go tasting?

I have FMIL issues myself and I would say just go to keep the peace. To me its not worth it for her to complain about it later so I’d take the few hours and go. Maybe you can just give your mom a heads up about it as well so she wont’t feel left out.

@ChibiBride:  Ah, you didn’t mention that she was a Zilla, or that there were other wedding things you would rather her be included in. It sounded like a drama-free suggestion to me!

Let her know what you would like her help with instead, since the dress is a Mom thing for you.

Go with her.  If you happen to find something, you don’t have to buy it before your mom gets to see it.  I don’t think your FMIL is being inconsiderate.  I would really have appreciated that had I been in your shoes.

@ChibiBride:  does your FMIL have daughters?  If she doesn’t and this is her one chance to go dress shopping, then I’d go look at dresses with her and just tell your mom what’s up.  Could you bring both of them?

@ChibiBride:  Going shopping without your mother and buying a dress without your mother are two different things. It doesn’t hurt to go look 🙂 You only get to buy one wedding dress so you may as well just enjoy the whole experience. You’ll never get it again!

Definitely go and make her happy. Make sure she is on board with you not committing to buy a dress on that day thought. Perhaps say that you are gathering ideas from various dresses for your custom dress and would love her input (which you don’t have to actually use)
